Joe Walsh criticizes Michelle Obama for attending Hadiya Pendleton funeral

Former Tea Party congressman Joe Walsh took to his Twitter account this morning to criticize first lady Michelle Obama for planning to attend the funeral of young Chicago shooting victim Hadiya Pendleton.

In his first of two tweets directed at the first lady, Walsh wrote, “‘Heartbroken’ Michelle Obama attending funeral of Hadiya Pendleton. I guess the other 553 murder victims didn’t break her heart. (1/2)”

Walsh’s follow-up tweet reads: “Most of the 553 Chicago murder victims in 2012 & 2013 were young black males. Is she attending this funeral to make a political point? (2/2)”

Fifteen-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was gunned down January 29th just a mile from the president’s Chicago home.

Pendleton was in Washington, D.C. a week before her death for President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. She performed in the parade with her high school band.

Pendleton’s story has received national coverage, and the young teen has become a symbol of Chicago gun violence, drawing national attention.

On Sunday night, at John Barleycorn in Schaumburg, the Eagles guitarist played a one-hour benefit concert for Walsh’s opponent, Tammy Duckworth. Walsh had performed at the Naperville Ribfest the night before, which was why he could fit this show into a tour to support Analog Man, his first solo album in 20 years, and bring his entire band.

“Tammy’s really unique to me,” Walsh said before the show. “I don’t normally get involved in politics. She’s someone who really cares. “It doesn’t matter who she’s running against. I would be here. She’s a breath of fresh air.”

Duckworth stood beside Walsh, wearing a black t-shirt with the name of Walsh’s first band, The James Gang. Later, Duckworth told Your Ward Room Blogger that her favorites Eagles song is “Hotel California.” That was a good answer, because Walsh joined the band on that album.
