Some think so. But when dolphins are facing imminent danger and death I don't believe it is, especially if the sounds can be canned.
It didnt make the same worldwide headlines as the dead Gowanus dolphin, but a remarkable rescue of nearly 150 dolphins in imminent danger of stranding was just carried out in Australia, where wildlife experts deployed a questionable but ultimately successful technique to lure the large pod to safety.
A juvenile dolphin was captured and used to issue distress calls out in deeper water, in order to attract the pods attention and lead it to safety.

(45,488 posts)Suppose you had to get 150 humans out of a building quickly. Would it be ethical to kidnap a child, make it cry to get the people out? Probably not.

(25,592 posts)Something we cannot do with dolphins. They did what they needed to do.
Dolphins are smart enough to tell a real distress call form a canned one, for the same reason we can. Wrong responses to our answers.

(7,515 posts)but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some of this "questioning" of the ethics is just proverbial 'ass covering'.
