Democrats Appear to Have Edge for Senate in Iowa

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Iowa shows what other polls have found: Rep. Steve King (R) is the overwhelming favorite of Iowa Republicans to be their U.S. Senate candidate next year.

But King also trails every Democratic candidate tested against him by at least 7 points. The leading Democrat, Rep. Bruce Braley (D), leads King by double-digits, 49% to 38%.

In fact, the Democratic candidate leads in 14 of the 16 possible match ups tested, with the only exceptions being small leads for Rep. Tom Latham (R) over Chet Culver (D) and Dave Loebsack (D).

I grew up in this district and never understood why the people there voted for him in the first place.

My mother was always working to get a Democrat elected for on office or another. Berkeley Biddel was among those she worked for.

King is a coward. I doubt he'll risk his easy House gig for a potential loss in the Senate.

The morning after U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin revealed he will retire in two years, the early Democratic front-runner to replace him hinted that he’s interested.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, who Iowa Democrats have said is the favorite for 2014, said in a statement this morning: “Over the past 24 hours, I’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of encouragement and support from Iowans in every corner of the state urging me to consider a campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2014. Iowans deserve a senator who will continue Tom Harkin’s legacy of strengthening the middle class and standing up for Iowans who don’t have a voice. While Senator Harkin’s shoes are impossible to fill, over the coming days my family and I will carefully weigh a possible candidacy for Senate.”

Braley has a reputation for being smart, ambitious and ready for higher office, Democratic insiders have said.

Thanks for the good news, babylonsistah

He is a coward when it comes to tough races outside his district.
Unless he was projected as a clear winner, i doubt he will run.
Latham is barely even known in his district. i doubt he will run.
That leaves Vander Plaats, who would love to run and grace us all with his religulousness and holier than thou 19th century dogma.
I really suspect he will be the candidate.

Personally doubt Reynolds has the desire to run this one - think she is being groomed to replace governor for life Branstad.
