This object is blocking part of a N.Philly highway:

A large steel tank is blocking part of a roadway in Northeast Philadelphia. It's definitely an unusual sight for drivers to see on the 4900 block of Princeton Avenue in the Tacony section of the city.

Initial reports say that a truck carrying scrap stainless steel tanks hit the overpass, and one of the tanks fell off the truck. NBC10 is working to confirm that information. As Chopper10 flew over the scene, you could see drivers going around the large tank.

3. Yikes! I know a guy that hit an overpass hauling a track hoe/excavator. One of

the pretty big ones that takes up a whole low-boy flatbed trailer. It ripped the whole thing right off and dumped it on the highway. That had to be something to behold! Good thing no one was very close to him. The force of that ripping off the chains and taking that thing off the trailer was treamendous. This guy didn't know how to load it right so that he had the boom in the right position to give him enough clearance.

6. Unexpected road hazards.

Early one foggy morning on I-80 in Iowa I saw a state trooper parked ahead of me at the beginning of an off ramp, and a semi with trailer up at the far end of the off ramp. As I passed the cruiser I saw the entire rear axle assembly, eight wheels and two axles, just sitting in the lane, and noticed the rear of the semi-trailer was on the ground. It was still half dark, and naturally there were no lights or reflectors on the axles.

7. One guess is that these incidents are happening more often because drivers

are relying on their GPS - which doesn't warn of low bridges! There have been several very bad accidents of this sort involving buses.

BTW - a SS tank that size is very, very expensive! I guarantee you a lot of people are having fits this morning!

11. Some of the newer ones will -- with a couple of caveats...

You program in the height of your rig, and it won't send you over any route where height would be a problem. BUT:

(1) That capacity only works if you let it map out your route. If you're just tooling around town, making local stops, it couldn't care less.

(2) It assumes it has correct information from the people who supply the maps. They're usually pretty good, but all makers tell you that you're the one driving, so if you choose to turn right over a cliff just because the unit said it was a good shortcut, that's your problem.

8. My favorite variant of this occurred some years back at an uphill exit on the I-90 -

the trucker had been hauling steel coils. One of the coils had gotten loose and unwound back down the off ramp. I don't know how he was allowed to leave the loading dock with the coils loaded that way!
