Just look at him! Wearing no clothes and carousing about! How could anyone think this sinful display of the human body is quality art?
Carry on Beyonce, carry on.

(4,015 posts)yeah, that kinda sucks for the argument.
Go back a couple of thousand years and this statue would stand there fully vlothed and colored.

(4,015 posts)Thanks!
Were the medieval folks under the inpression that the greeks left them unclothed? Since greek and roman art was the basis of the renaissance that would be interesting to know.

(13,485 posts)Renaissance art was inspired by Roman and Greek stuff, but the Di Medici were looking for the new and provocative in the early period. Then the church infiltrated the family and suddenly things got more religious. The entire Sistine Chapel was painted nude by Michelangelo but later the church thought it was disgusting to see the naughty bits and had most of the secret parts painted over as to not disturb the sensitive cardinals who were too busy with the castrati and the alter boys.

(62,444 posts)As the OP is not a depiction of an artist, I guess I miss the point.
Did he walk around naked?
Democracyinkind
(4,015 posts)It was the Romans and the Greeks that painted and clothed their statues.
Altough the renaissance tried to emulate the classics, they parted ways with the tradition of clothing the statues, for whatever reason.
My comment was written while still under the impression that this OP was discussing classical statues, not renaissance-era.

(62,444 posts)The OP seems to be under the impression that the sculpture shown above is a talented artist.
Take this, for example:
The point of the OP is that it takes tremendous talent for a woman to stand in that pose.
But, yes, Beyonce can do that:
Or, better yet, consider this:
And... boom:
Democracyinkind
(4,015 posts)But the argument, as I perceived it, was flawed:
1. Classical statues are usually naked
2. Classical statues are the very epitome of high brow art
Therefore, nakedness and art aren't mutually exclusive.

Anyway, someone else pointed out that it wasn't meant this way, and I got it.

(62,444 posts)Apparently, the OP believes that taking your clothes off requires the talent of Michelangelo.
I mean, sure enough, I just took off my pants and while it is hard for me to be objective, I belief I have created a much more realistic depiction of a penis and pubic hair than is on that statue. So, apparently, I have more talent than the hack who chipped away all that marble.
The OP is apparently trying to say that we fail to appreciate that Beyonce's body is a work of art. People have been making the mistake of calling her an artist of some kind. The OP has helpfully reminded us that we are to admire the form of her body and the effort that goes into crafting a depiction of a human body, starting with only a human body as the medium in which to work.
When you do a Google image search of, say, Beyonce and "camel toe", you are to understand that the resulting images (of which there are legion) are the result of the immense talent required to produce a lifelike depiction of the contours of a vulva and labia compressed by fabric out of what is, in its raw form, merely a lifeless natural substance of some kind.

(62,444 posts)You have posted a picture of a beautifully crafted piece of stone. It is a work of art. An object.
Why don't you post a picture of the artist?
Or do you not understand that you have not posted a picture of an artist?
Because the picture you have posted is of a brainless object with no talent whatsoever.

(27,711 posts)The statue is an expression of the artists talent.
Enjoy the beauty of the human figure, my friend.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)What gives you the impression I don't?
Clearly, any woman who does not have her figure falls far short of her talent.
The statue, and Beyonce, are pleasant things to look at.

(31,518 posts)A plaster cast from the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum -
This fig-leaf was hung on the David on the occasion of visits by royal ladies. It was last used in the time of Queen Mary (1867-1953). According to anecdotal information, on her first encounter with the cast of 'David', Queen Victoria was so shocked by his nudity that a firm suggestion was made that something has to be done. Consequently, the correctly proportioned fig leaf was created and stored in readiness for any visit the Queen might make, for which occasions it was hung on the figure from two strategically implanted hooks.

And the sculpture is supposed to show David right before facing Goliath. Hence the worried look and one might also suggest, hence the shrinkage.
