Well, I was half-right.

In the Alabama standoff, I figured it would end badly, with that guy Dykes deciding to go out in a blaze of glory and take the kid with him.
I hoped I was wrong.

So Dykes did go out in a blaze of glory, like he wanted, sounds like, but the kid is safe, thankfully.
