Professional sports have become such obvious corporate money making events that it is hard to watch. Consider football, four hours of hype, bands and above all advertising to play a game that should last one hour. Folks, it all about making money. And don't forget the week long buildup and false suspense.

Yes, there were a few good movies on TV and lots of good books, or relax by doing a little gardening.

Last time I gave in and watched was when my home-state team (the Vikings) were up against the New Orleans Saints. It was easy to tell that the Saints were deliberately aiming to injure the Vikings' quarterback, Brett Favre. I used to work for a media monitoring company - it went bust the end of August 2011 - and the Super Bowl with all of the commercials was "our" Black Friday. All the hype and all the bs over the ads the company made big bucks. I miss having a job but I DON'T miss all the Super Bowl bs. This is the second Super Bowl without a job for me but hey I just keep plugging away and figure I'll find one soon enough. One would think that with your engaging personality that "assholes" would be lining up around to block to give you money for your medications.

Like many people who will be watching the game, I will watch and remain fully confident that these few hours on this Sunday will in no way hinder whatever money is spent or hours dedicated to helping those less fortunate.

Enjoy spending your Sunday afternoon judging others, sounds exhilarating.

Even more outrageous...our elected leaders force us build stadiums for their crony wealthy owners so they can have grossly overpaid celebrity players that the public can then become enamored with and worship. The scheme of celebrity, sports, etc is used as a form of propaganda intended to keep the public's mental focus on frivolous stuff and not on critical thinking and how we are being royally screwed.

Those that watched the games, at least in the AFC could see how "missed", calls let the Ravens stay in their games, even spotted them an easy touchdown or two.

And then there is Ray Lewis, who should be doing 60 years to life in a prison. Come on Ray, tell us who really killed those two guys.

I have never understood the game of football. It always seemed like a game in which over-sized men who padded themselves, a sign of cowardice, tapped each other on the butts as they tried to move a piece of animal skin down a field. As a gay man I can appreciate the tapping on the butt but otherwise, not so much.

I'm not suggesting the players are not athletes or that skill is not required.....my only point is I never understood the interest in the sport similar to my amazement at people who champion golf.

Give me a game of soccer or rugby (men who don't pad themselves from injury), tennis or even baseball....but football has never interested me.

and even I could care less about the Super Bowl. If the Raiders aren't playing in it, it's pretty much ho-hum for me. But what I don't like about Super Bowls is the extra attention being paid to the commercials. Yeah, there are a bunch of special commercials for Super Bowls. So what? They bombard us with stupid commercials all the time. Commercials have really become a turn-off for me when it comes to spectator sports. It's why I can rarely sit through an entire game, even if my favorite team plays. Especially the beer and the phone commercials....I don't know how much more I can stomach them. I'd rather the networks not go to commercials, and just either continue to show the players getting off the field, or have dead air until the break is over. With all the commercialism, I feel as though I and other viewers are being treated like mindless drones.

Instead, they call "in sick". Given I work at a federal facility, I wish they would just make the day a Federal holiday since that's the only time the majority of my co workers make a point of showing up (cuz otherwise they don't get the extra pay) like they should!

Sun Feb 3, 2013, 04:21 PM
Feb 2013

The slopes are usually less crowded.

Or I go skiing and leave to come home before the game if I have teams I'm rooting for.

Since the Ravens are in the game this year we got the skiing out of the way yesterday.

But during the regular season I generally don't watch too much football except for when the Ravens or Redskins play but I often can't sit through a whole game. I was never really in to team sports and sucked at them at school. And I can't sit through a baseball game either. Too long.

I have friends, family and neighbors who are really into football and know all the players and details. I often feel completely left out of the conservations.

Now sports are fun if I'm involved but I generally suck at baseball and can't throw a football to save my life so I never really followed those sports so was never really interested. But I enjoy playing tennis, sailing and skiing. Those are the only sports I'm a little good at.

But this year I've been following my home team, the Ravens, more then usual and excited they made it into the Superbowl

So go Ravens!!

No. We don't watch any of that either. We stopped watching all television over nineteen years ago - that included all sports. We just ignore it all. Plenty of other things to fill your day with. If we want we can see some of the commercials later because people tend to post the ones they like best. But the commercialism is why we gave television up to begin with - we didn't want corporate America owning our children's souls. The kids are out of the house now and we do use netflix. And we always kept a television for viewing movies. Our set is nineteen inches and is older than our oldest child who is twenty-eight - some day it will have to go.

It is not possible for me to be less interested in the Super Bowl. With the average price of a ticket at $3,400 it's way overpriced and overrated.

Somewhere along the way, we've lost focus of what sports are supposed to be. Instead of focusing on education, schools and colleges focus instead on their sports teams. Sports celebrities are no longer people we want our children to look up to. They use drugs to improve their performance, abuse animals, abuse their family members, and generally are poor sports about the whole thing.

I realize not all sports celebrities are like this, but all too often the headlines include their names along with the details of what they've done.

It's just big business, taking advantage of people like all other big businesses these days. An athlete who breaks the rules should be out of the league permanently, that would set a good example of what happens when you break the rules. Instead, too often, they get slapped on the hand and are allowed to return after a time.

I'd rather see schools and colleges focus on education instead of sports, and professional sports should set a good example for our youth, which they often do not.

I won't be watching, and I won't feel like I've missed anything.

I live in San Francisco, and the only thing I'll watch is maybe some of the commercials, if they are clever ...

Last year, our team won the World Series and there were massive riots, with over 30 fires set across the city, and a large amount of property damaged, including a city bus being completely destroyed.

I was walking through the city and some owners were boarding up their businesses.

I don't blame them.

I have zero interest in professional sports, and one of the things I love best about living in New Mexico is: no professional major league sports.

And apparently I was quite confused about who is actually playing, since from hints dropped as I read through the posts, teams were named that I didn't know were in it.

It also helps that I don't have a TV, which has vastly improved the quality of my life for the nearly five years I've been without.

Football just wasn't that important In the 60's and early to mid 70's the Super Bowl was mostly for people who were betting on the teams. That was before America became "dumbed down". Sorry, football fans, but I've waited so long to say it. If you genuinely enjoy football, that's great, but if you go crazy over it because other people do, it's kinda sad.

I like the complexity and strategizing of the game (as opposed to something like soccer). Even played on my high school team. I knew of a kid back then who died after suffering a spinal cord injury in a football game.

As the years have passed the players have gotten bigger and stronger, the hits more powerful, and the injuries more frequent. Somebody is making a lot of money off it so it's not likely to change much anytime soon.

I'll probably watch the game but not with much enthusiasm.

gathered in our home. We will be reverently silent during the commercials, and critique them noisily when the game starts up again. If there is a good play or two, we will remark upon it but we will not be hoo-rahing or bellowing like Joe on Family Guy.

We will comment mercilessly on the quality of the half time program, particularly if their is a surfeit of patriotic excess (not a problem in recent years like it was during the BushCorp era). We will enjoy a nice meal and some beverages.

Do I care who wins? Naaah. No one does, unless it's "their" favorite team.

We were busy running errands. GREAT time to be on the road - nobody else was out! Freeways were open, major boulevards were empty, perpetually gridlocked intersections were flowing smoothly as could be. Totally uncrowded roads! But in residential neighborhoods near us you couldn't find a parking space along the curb to save your life. Must have been a lot of Super Bowl parties going on.

Overhyped, overblown, half-time shows are mostly lame, and the commercials really aren't as great as people rave about. I think they used to be better, but now they are all just trying too hard to be THE funniest, or coolest, or heart-tuggingest. Yawn.
