Gun Control Group Buys Ad Spot for Today's Super Bowl: Watch It Now

You may not see it live, unless you live in the D.C. area, but a leading gun control group has bought a costly 30-second ad spot for halftime at the Super Bowl today--but you can watch it below. Of course this is far from the first time a Super Bowl commercial was "previewed" online and sure to get a wider audience.

4. Well intentioned but weak

Quoting LaPierre in the past doesn't move the needle.
All they need to claim is that "9/11 changed everything," and their flip-flops are forgiven.
Needs more specific targetted message.

5. I don't think so. 9/11 would help support the need for background checks,

unless you want it easy for drug cartels and terrorist groups to buy weapons at gun shows. I would think 9/11 would have made acquiring weapons and tracking them through registration (similar to cars or motorcycles or boats) so that we knew only law abiding citizens had the weapons. I think this is a "fail" argument because 9/11 should have tightened regulations... Look what happened to our airport security. For a land of the free and the brave, we sure have enough laws and a "Homeland Security" apparatus now that leads the rest of the world to believe that bringing down 4 planes with 2 on board taking over control, will drive Americans to restrict freedoms for all people, while simutaneoulsy embarking on a costly, lengthy war that drains the treasury and the opportunity for all Americans into the future.

So, as far as Gun Control goes, I don't see why a legal background check can't be had for those purchasing weapons. And the requirement for the background check should include some sort of licensing and insurance on the gun owner (similar to a car) that means the person with a gun license has taken gun safety courses, has taken a mental wellness test of some means, and whatever makes a responsible, law-abiding citizen "ok" for owning a weapon. If a person wanting a gun, had to get their license before even walking into a gun store or gun show, it would be easier on a gun seller all in all. The responsibility of a wanting gun owner would be upon their shoulders and not on the rest of us. I would think the licensing process would leave a few gun enthusiest and hunters with weapons. Registering a gun as soon as its manufactured and processing paperwork anytime it is sold, would also be a better way of reducing the illegal guns. A responsible gun owner, upon selling their weapon, would have to process sale/ registration papers just like they would with a car. People would still be able to own a weapon; they would just have to do so in a responsible manner and have training with the weapon.

Common sense won't penetrate the thick cranial carapaces of the rabid "Moar gunz" crowd, but it will reach rational Americans.

I think this is a good approach -- can't everybody agree on this one simple issue? What rational justification is there for opposing background checks for gun purchases?
