Hell hath no fury like a Facebook scorned. In todays digital age, most of us assume everyone understands this fact. But everyone now and again, people surprise us. An ever-increasing element of this reality is that the hounds of Reddit, the Twitter armies, and Facebook vigilantes are more than willing to remind people that we live in a publicized world. You cant hide behind privacy statements or legal jargon or appeals to company policy to pacify an Internet mob. Once you cross the line of Internet etiquette, the people of the World Wide Web will hunt you down and do their best to ruin you forever.
Applebees apparently never took note of this. Youve most likely heard about their most recent encounter with virality. But in case youve been living under a rock, heres a brief summary:
A waitress at a St. Louis Applebees lost her job for posting online the receipt upon which a pastor had declined to leave a tip, with a snarky note saying she gave God 10 percent.
After her dinner on Jan. 25, Pastor Alois Bell crossed out the automatic 18 percent tip charged for parties of more than eight. I give God 10% why do you get 18, she wrote above her signature.
Employee Chelsea Welch a colleague of the stiffed server took a picture of the receipt and uploaded it to the online site Reddit. She subsequently lost her job, an Applebees spokesman confirmed to TheSmokingGun.com, for violating a customers privacy.

(8,515 posts)I thought the right thing to do was to fight for rights for low wage earners, such as increased minimum wage, not to keep people from going to restaurants owned by right wingers. How do we tell, anyway?
I do try to frequent places that I know are dem, but I don't know all the time who they are. I once knew a lady, whose daughter played with my daughter. She was a supervisor at Applebee's. She certainly worked hard to get that job, and was supporting her children as best she could. She was divorced, and husband was then struggling.
We cannot boycott all stores and restaurants we disagree with, as it hurts all of us, not just them. Making a point, though, like we all did with Chic fil a, is the right way to do it. I know I still love my chicken from there, but for a while, I boycotted.
Point is that we don't want to ruin a business, but letting them know we can is very important.
MADem
(135,425 posts)What you are saying is "Don't boycott them because the underpaid wage slaves might get fired."
Your thinking is illogical--they WANT to make obscene profits with shitty food and underpaid servers. They can't do that without customers. They aren't gonna fold their tent--they are going to fight to keep that income stream. They need to suck up to their customers to keep the business.
And unlike "Pastor" Bell, the customers, in this instance, have right and might on their side.
You can be sure a lot of people--many not caucasian--got laid off as a consequence of the Montgomery bus boycott. But was that a reason to not go forward? Hell no.

Probably a matter of liquor license but I don't think Denny's has alcohol here, I might be wrong as our local Denny's closed years ago. It's not especially missed.

MADem
(135,425 posts)Denny's used to be a Very Unfriendly Place for black folk in some parts of our fair land.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denny%27s#Racial_discrimination_lawsuits
In 1994, Denny's settled a class action lawsuit filed by thousands of black customers who had been refused service, forced to wait longer, or pay more than white customers. The $54.4 million settlement was the largest and broadest under federal public-accommodations laws established thirty years previously to end segregation in restaurants and public spaces.[15]
These are some of the most notable incidents involving racial discrimination at Denny's, all occurring after the settlement:
A black Denny's customer was told, in 1995, that he and his friends had to pay up front at the counter upon ordering their meals. He questioned the waitress: "We asked the waitress about it and she said some black guys had been in earlier who made a scene and walked out without paying their bill. So the manager now wanted all blacks to pay up front."[16]
Another 1993 incident occurred when six black United States Secret Service agents visited a Dennys restaurant in Annapolis, Maryland. They were forced to wait an hour for service while their white companions were seated immediately upon entering.[17]
In San Jose, California, in 1994, several black teenagers were refused service unless they agreed to pay in advance.[18][19]
In 1997, six Asian-American students from Syracuse University visited a local Dennys restaurant late at night. They waited for more than half an hour as white patrons were regularly served, seated, and offered more helpings. They complained to management and to their server but were forced to leave the establishment by two security guards called by Dennys management. Then, according to the students, a group of white men came out of Denny's and attacked them[20] and shouted racial epithets. Several of the students were beaten into unconsciousness.[21][22]

(353 posts)No I waited on tables in the 80`s. Never saw anything like that going on where I worked, at least not while I was on shift. I appreciate that you explained what you meant I must not have been paying attention during that time period, pretty disgusting!
MADem
(135,425 posts)Cracker Barrel did the same thing and eventually got their asses handed to them, too.
Not sure what the deal was, but it was institutionalized. A lot of folk are still skittish about going in those places for that reason; which is why if the waitstaff is diverse, it makes one feel better about the kind of service to expect!

(609 posts)Company function, mandatory fun. I got chicken strips with french fries because it seemed like the entree I could eat the fastest and leave. It tasted like bland, frozen-and-microwaved crap that I could have bought at any grocery store; but, there was definitely some kind of flavouring powder sprinkled on everything. Like, I could lick the flavouring off, and taste the bland part (which I did, actually, much to my co-workers' chagrin).

(15,384 posts)It seems to be a trend that a lot of restaurants have an inside decor where they just fling things on the wall - not just pictures but farming implements, steering wheels from classic cars, etc. Maybe Applebee's isn't like that anymore. Last time I went to one was in college, and I seem to remember seeing a complete merry-go-round horse as part of the bar decor. Other restaurants that follow the same pattern are Red Robins, Fuddruckers, and to a certain extent places like Outback Steakhosue and cowboy themed steak houses.

Applebees management is living in a world in which such religious assholes are kowtowed to because of their perceived power within a community. They live in the Fox News version of the world.

Me thinks it would be better if these people(the commenters) all told everyone else to buy nothing but neccessities for the next 30 days or
until wages are brought in line with the actual cost of living, EVERYWHERE. Then maybe the servers wouldn't need to rely on tips to live.

(15,412 posts)I'm troubled by the video in the link through from the op. It's a local (St. Louis) Fox report which completely trashes the Pastor. She should have been trashed but had she been a Catholic Priest would the take be the same on Fox? Or was it because she is black, unattractive, runs a "store front" church, is a woman part of the reason for the unfavorable press?

(31,493 posts)Those who point out that Jesus attended church and "maybe" gave fail to realize that He was living under the old covenant until His death which brought in the start of the new covenant. It's a shame that so many fall prey to these idiot preachers and their bull shit ....they are the ones who are supposed to know about these things and yet they used the old covenant tithing law to bring in money for themselves. The newly formed church in Acts portrays a group of new believers who voluntarily give.

(3,502 posts)I don't even understand why the food is terrible. There are a zillion chains, and while they're not fine dining or particularly healthy, most of them have stuff that tastes way better than Applebee's. My son's first server job was at an Applebee's, so we used to go once in a while when he was on. Mediocre was a culinary triumph at that place. There's been one less than five minutes away from the house for years now and we don't really even think of it when/if we're looking to eat out, even though the price is right. It literally doesn't even cross our minds. So, boycotting will not be an issue for us.

(15,189 posts)I haven't been there in over 20 years. I think they were right in firing the waitress that put the receipt online for all to see. It had the woman's name on it. The other "nice" remarks are signed, but they don't give the last 4 digits of their credit card. Had the woman paid in cash, then no problem. If they hadn't fired the woman, they may have had a lawsuit. They may still have one.
