Dear xxx,

Here we go. I just launched my campaign for U.S. Senate.

I’m running now because the fight for the progressive values that John Kerry stood up for and we believe in are at stake.

We have a short but critical campaign in front of us, with important issues facing the Commonwealth and our country. We can expect to find ourselves in a fierce fight -- and we need a grassroots organization ready to win it.

|Will you stand with me today? Click here to help me launch this grassroots campaign by raising $500,000 in our first month.

The challenge before us is clear. This is the only Senate election in 2013. And while I’ve called on all candidates entering the race to join me and commit to the People’s Pledge that kept special interest spending out of our Senate race last year, we know how badly Karl Rove and his allies want to buy this seat.

The nation’s focus will be squarely on Massachusetts over the next five months, and we need to be ready.

We need to get off to a strong start by raising $500,000 in February. Can you help us reach that goal with a contribution right now?

The victories we won in 2012 -- from re-electing President Obama to sending Elizabeth Warren and other Democrats to the Senate -- mean we can make much progress in the months and years ahead.

We simply cannot afford to lose momentum now.

I’m ready to take on the tough issues -- gun violence, climate change, health care. But first we must come together to win an historic campaign.

I’m off and running -- and I need your help to raise $500,000 before the end of February. Click here to give $10 or more today.

how concerned everyone was about this seat? Let's hope as much energy goes into helping to keep it.

Thanks for posting.

Which is sad, because we have a true progressive in this race.

Representative Ed Markey throws his hat into the Senate race

MALDEN — One day after former Senator Scott Brown announced he would not run in the special Senate race for John Kerry’s vacated seat, Representative Ed Markey, a Democrat from Malden, formally announced his plan to make a run for the spot in the US Senate.

In a 20-minute speech at the Malden YMCA where Markey played basketball as a child, he made no mention of the Republican who would have been perhaps his most fearsome opponent.

Instead, he regaled a crowd of about 500 supporters in the gymnasium with stories about his hometown roots, and declared that he seeks a seat in the Senate to stem the tide of climate change, oppose the National Rifle Association, work toward a federal ban on assault rifles, curb America’s dependence on foreign oil, and support President Barack Obama’s policies on Capitol Hill.

“I am running for the US Senate to put the American dream within the reach of all Massachusetts residents,” said Markey, 66, as his wife, Susan, stood to the side on the stage. “I am running to move President Barack Obama’s agenda forward.”

The special election to replace Secretary of State John Kerry again came to Western Massachusetts on Saturday as U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, D-Malden, spent time visiting with the supporters and the public at the Student Price Cafe in downtown Springfield.

Local Democrats packing the bar ahead of Markey's arrival included many of the familiar faces that served as the Western Massachusetts ground troops for U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren's successful 2012 campaign.

"I'm going to run on my own record and talk about the laws I've been able to help pass," Markey said. "I'm going to lay out my vision for the future of this country by talking about all the issues central to it."

Markey, who drew loud cheers when speaking in support of a federal assault weapons ban, stands on the opposite of Lynch on a number of issues, including abortion rights. While Lynch is pro-life, Markey is pro-choice and not shy about that stance.
...
"I just had about 700 people in Malden and was gratified all of by neighbors came out to support me," he said. "I know that Western Massachusetts is going to bey key to this election and I'll be out here over and over again to earn the support of the Western Massachusetts voters."
