I was happy to see TN was not in the top ten conservative, especially since we have such pathetic politicians. Six of the most conservative states were not southern either, which goes against the conventional thinking.

(46,436 posts)Alaska is the number 1 most moderate state according to the polling, which just goes to show that it's the political corruption (think Big Oil) that keeps the Republicans in power here, not the will of the people.

(25,699 posts)They trend Republican because of a general dislike of government, rather than any real agreement with the party. There's also the problem that Alaska is the biggest bastion of "They're all the same, why bother" anti-voting sentiment that I've ever encountered... and to be totally fair, since it's 100% Anchorage that decides who goes to Juneau, and Alaska's electoral votes don't really count for much in the presidential election, the "why bother" attitude is kind of apt

(46,436 posts)and since the pubs completely gerrymandered the legislative districts in their favor ( to the point where it's back in court for the second time ), "why bother" statewide is a real problem, as well.
And then, of course, there's my state representative who ran as a Democrat (her fourth term) and then switched parties before she was even sworn in giving the R's a supermajority in the House. It's pretty pathetic how corrupt the Republicans are here, but that's what having an oil-based economy does for you. I personally would rather see the majors and all the carpetbaggers leave, even if it means we fall on hard times for a while. It would force some innovation and self-reliance, which would be a good thing.

(10,893 posts)That's sort of surprising, since we have been one of the biggest whipping boys for the Right. But it's not too surprising when you think about how Prop 8 passed and how we have yet to get marijuana fully legalized.

(67,420 posts)strong influence of too many churches here, especially mormon. many right wing repub types run as dems because repubs using their brand have a hard time getting elected. lots of asian culture influence which tends to be conservative with a small c.
our new congress woman comes from a culture of rabid homophobes. we are still waiting to see if she is gonna do the old bait and switch now that she is sworn in
