(8,377 posts)The last worthwhile thing he did was McCain-Feingold. Basically living in the sewer since then.
For a man with such a miserable record, he sure seems eager to keep calling attention to himself every Sunday morning.

(32,723 posts)Keep in mind that contrary to the popular myth, the Liberals weren't "spitting on the soldiers" and calling them "baby killers".
The reality is that it was the Right Wing that treated returning troops with contempt. They believed the Vietnam Vets were a bunch of weak ass crybabies who were also nuts who were strung out on drugs and they wouldn't hire them because they suffered from flashbacks. The idea was that they could be working in an office and then suddenly flip out thinking they were back in the jungle and grab you from behind and snap your neck like a twig thinking you were a VC.
The Right Wing figured that's why they couldn't win a war against a bunch of guys running around in black pajamas.
That's why so many Vietnam vets weren't able to get jobs in management where they could hire other vets.

There was some of that on the left as well, I remember a teacher talking about it, an dhow much they were wrong about it, and how he regretted thinking like that when he became more educated. He also said that wasn't the only stupid thing they did, then recounted the story of the time they actually thought they could levitate the Pentagon off the planet.
I would recon that more Liberals had family members in the war than conservatives, just on the basis of how many currect conservatives dodged the draft.

(32,723 posts)It was about a group of hippies. One of them got drafted and was killed in the war. They showed up at the funeral and the father treated them like they were the enemy until he saw they loved him and came to put flowers on his son's grave.
Also, in Forest Gump they recreated the protest signs of the era including the "Support Our Troops - Bring them home".
I get sick of idiots acting like Liberals are either "useful idiots" or "5th columnists" trying to bring down America from within. Those types are fast dying off.

(7,886 posts)and it is the false equillivancy game (see Howard Dean with the 50% to 10% ratio of crazies).
Hair was about a group of hippies going around and freaking the mundanes, they take a guy who was drafted out for a good time, and one of the group takes his place in the training camp for a day so he can have one last night, but that night was the night they were shipped out and he gets killed in the war instead of the drafted guy. very powerful movie, if you're into musicals.

(32,723 posts)The "counterculture" movie based on the play.
Give it some thought and you would realize the youth movement in the Middle East is going through it's counterculture revolution right now. As a result they are suffering from a few cults on par with the Manson Family that sucker in the young and naive while their authority figures that control law enforcement are capable of being much more oppressive on par with "Punishment Park" because they directly control the local media.

(7,886 posts)the Hippies were just around at the right time to get noticed, and their MO was to freak people out as much as possible, to challenge their world view. Political counter culture perhaps?
I do think that it's awesome so much is going on in the middle east, I hope everything turns out for the better, it could far too easily all be subverted and get locked down even tighter.

(32,723 posts)The current guy only got in because the movement didn't rally around a single person. It was very similar to the California recall of Gray Davis that resulted in Arnold Schwarzenegger winning. Add to that the Muslim Brotherhood called themselves "The Freedom and Justice Party". Young people overthrew a dictator to join the 21st Century, not the 12th.

(32,723 posts)All we see on the news are the extremists. The bulk of the people aren't even that religious.
In America, most people will say they are "Christian" but they NEVER go to church unless they are attending a wedding or a funeral.
More people were aware of that legislation requiring the post office to prefund. It's ridiculous and the reason they are in such financial difficulties. Most people I talk to think it's another example of how government doesn't work. People need to be educated and something needs to be done to reverse this piece of legislation. The GOP war on the public sector must be stopped. Their efforts to privatize everything, get rid of unions, etc. must be stopped!
