Last edited Thu Jan 31, 2013, 09:47 PM - Edit history (1)
I rent a desk at Indra's in Eugene, Oregon where I have one of my desktops set up. The open carry guy who comes in here walked by me and went into the restroom behind me.
A minute later we heard a loud gunshot and a scream from the loo. We yelled in asking him if he was OK and he answered, "Get an ambulance."
He had shot himself through the leg putting his old west style replica revolver. The desk worker put a tourniquet on his leg and he asked for us to hide his gun so the police would not take it.
The employee told him no way, that then the police would wonder if we shot him, create suspicion, and that that would be tampering with evidence.
He was taken off to the hospital with a serious leg injury. The bullet fortunately ricocheted and went through the roof.
He is an open carry advocate, and I will post the story in thread when it is posted on the Register Guard (local paper) website.

What a really bad place to be carrying a gun. might as well just push that video my brother sent about how unichs (sp) personally make sure they are neutered. ouch? well thats not quite so bloody though. and he thought that would gross me out. Clearly he hasn't seen many videos on youtube. I like the one where it was once impossible to fix a woman who's had her tubes either cut or burned. (9,070 posts)some idiot on a motorcycle with a big horn blew it in front of my campus right in front of me...a car driven by a nice senior citizen thought some truck was coming or something and slammed on brakes. The biker ended up over the sidewalk and barely missed getting killed. Then he got a ticket for violating the local sound ordinance! Anyone with an attitude shouldn't be on a bike, motorcycle, or have a gun. To me, you're describing a poor disposition.
Just saying...
ProgressiveProfessor
(22,144 posts)Stock motorcycle horns are functionally useless. They are buried in the fairing and cannot be heard by the average distracted cager in a minivan or SUV. Louder horns do their job, get heard, and raise attention. M/C have this invisibility problem...people get startled when we appear out of nowhere.
There are those who put air horns on M/Cs. Now that is scary.

(22,144 posts)If you ride, you understand the invisibility problem. M/Cs just appear out of nowhere and cut cagers off.
I have enough reflectors and other things on my bikes to light up a semi. I also have the flashing headlight mods. On some bikes there are aux lights. Yet the cagers cannot see me (or any of us). Horns are last minute defensive devices. Buried in the fairing, they are not as loud as they would be in the open air. However they get the driver with their [kids|coffee|cellphone|...] attention. One time in traffic I had the same mini van drift into my lane several times. Lacking a safe escape route and it being MD where lane splitting is not allowed, I knocked on her window at the next light...
The bikes with air horns scare people. They start looking for trucks and don't see them.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given

Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Thought I would see what the reason for thecalert was, but there is no reason. So, leave alone
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I would think that almost all on the Left understand the irony of the fact that the fearless leader of the Freepers relies on the government to provide not only his wheelchair but federally sponsored healthcare due to his disability. One would also think that Jim Rob, regardless of political affiliation, would be a lot more compassionate about the hundreds of thousands of other Americans that are differently abled, instead of ranting about taking away their earned benefits that he has the privilege to access unabated. But then again, I'm a liberal and support full-access to any government sponsored benefit that he chooses to acquire.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

There are lurkers in these forums who are regulars in the freeper forums and that is who alerted my snark to a jury.
There are also some conspiracy theorists here at DU that believe the flying freeper monkeys are here to destroy DU by creating friction,
Thankfully there is a jury system and it works pretty well.
My reply to the funny video was a swipe at Rim Job and his chorus of camp followers and certainly not a swipe at disabled people.
I can just see him standing in front of a mirror twirling a six shooter and shooting himself then posting on the Daily Freep about how he was shot by a scary person of color and then had to put the muscle on another scary person of color for a medicaid wheelchair.

SunSeeker
(51,630 posts)Most yahoos who want to open carry do not have sufficient training for that sort of thing, but even if they did, it only makes them a mark for criminals who want to take their gun. And yes, it upsets many thinking people, for very good reasons. Any civilian obnoxious and crazy enough to want to open carry in an urban setting around people lacks good judgment and really shouldn't have a gun at all. They pose a danger to themselves and the public, as this story demonstrates.

Live in a place where x% of the people in your BUILDING are statistically on anti-psychotics? YOU can have a Kitchen Knife...MAYBE.
Scale that fucker so that increases in population density (over time and based on census data) mean AUTOMATIC increases in firearm regulations, and I think that might go a long way toward keeping both sides of the debate happy.

(22,144 posts)I'll try a common sense approach...though I may be able to find training documents or book excerpts on a gun website.
An externally carried sidearm is in holster with some sort of safety device (strap etc). The trigger is protected, it is secure against falling out. Normally the holster is designated for the sidearm in question. If the firearm were to somehow discharge the majority of the time it would be parallel to the leg of the wearer, and do minimal damage.
Concealed holsters often rely on friction to maintain control of the weapon and may not retain the sidearm during rapid movement, or other physical activity. Depending on style of holsters, triggers are not protected nearly as well and the sidearms themselves are rarely secured. Additionally some people choose to concealed carry without a holster which has a much higher accident rate. An accidental discharge while concealed carrying is almost always injurious to the wearer. We have all heard stories of the gang banger hurting himself when he shoved his pistol in his pants...
The above is based solely on weapon safety. It does not take into account the impact on members of the public when they see someone open carrying in civilian attire in public areas. It does not account for level of training either. The Sherpa style holster is an example of an external holster that while functioning very well, has had accidental discharge issues due to lesser trained users.
Personally when I carry in public, I do it concealed with a shoulder holster with a thumb break strap. Its old school but it gives me all the protection of the external holster. It can be "read" more easily than a pancake style holster, but its a risk I accept. It is also much less likely to get lost or discharge in an accident. YMMV
SunSeeker
(51,630 posts)I have lost patience with gun nuttery, and suggesting that open carry is safe is pure gun nuttery. No "progressive" would belittle the valid concern that would reasonably overtake EVERY rational person when confronted with an open carry yahoo as the mere "upset" of "some." Seriously, if the ONLY reason you don't open carry is because it "upsets some people," you are horrifically ill-informed and/or delusional.
Strapping a Glock under your jacket is not going to make you a man or protect you or anyone else. It just makes you a danger to the public. Prime example: the guy at the Gabby Giffords shooting who almost shot an innocent bystander, because, in his own words, he mistook who the bad guy was.
ProgressiveProfessor
(22,144 posts)My position is clearly that in terms of pure gun safety (lack of accidents, results of accidental discharges, etc) open carry is safer. I always pointed out that due to negative public reaction, concealed carry was preferable.
I carry for a very specific reason I have discussed and posted many times. When that reason is not present I don't. It is an exceptional case.
polly7
(20,582 posts)safer because everyone stays clear of you? Many / most who choose to carry openly are probably very good people, but you wouldn't catch me in the same space with them.
ProgressiveProfessor
(22,144 posts)Less accidents and less injury from accidents as I discussed above.
Carrying a firearm openly except at a range, hunting, etc is a good way to scare the shit out of people, particularly in an urban setting. While it is legal in a surprising number of places, its not smart. I have never advocated it.
Another example of intimidation is tactical holsters (sidearm on the thigh, not waist). Vastly superior for any number of reasons including safety. Most cop shops will not allow that except for SWAT since it is so intimidating to the public.
polly7
(20,582 posts)It makes sense that your weapon would be better secured .... I still disagree completely with anyone carrying a gun in public either openly or concealed, but good on you for making sure it's as safe as possible, anyway.

(33,982 posts)A heavy revolver like that, being open carried, is in a holster that doesn't work real well if you unhitch your belt and take your pants down. (this sometimes applies to some carry rigs for police officers, that's how so many of them leave their guns in bathrooms) So, when you have to go, you take the gun out and put it somewhere, probably on the toilet paper rack or something like that. Then you put it back after you pull your pants up.
This introduces lots of opportunities to shoot yourself.
Worse, this guy's gun was an 'antique' revolver of some sort. Meaning, it is likely without a bar safety, that can prevent the hammer from dropping, or being forced forward by an impact, if you drop the weapon and the hammer is pushed forward without the trigger being pulled.
It is also possible to drop it, grab/fumble for it, and end up pulling the trigger, and having the gun fire properly as it was designed to.
Modern firearms are extremely drop-safe. If you start to drop one, it is safer to let it fall, rather than to grab for it and risk pulling the trigger, which on a DAO type firearm and a few others, will cause it to fire.
SO, this guy is Negligent to start with. That much is certain. The other half of the equation is that he is either stupid, or unlucky. Hard to tell from the story.

It's meant to prevent an accidental discharge and can be easily undone when the gun is going to be fired. Don't these folks know about that, or are they afraid something is gonna jump on them before they can think to do that?
That would prevent accidents so it would be SOP with guns. I dunno.

On Nov. 9, police records indicate Loeb had reported a suspicious person following her. When police investigated the report, no one was found. After the incident, Loeb told her coworkers and mentioned a concealed weapon she was carrying.
According to the police record, Loeb showed her coworkers the gun. Loeb, who had a concealed-weapons permit, took apart the gun in an attempt to make it safer for her coworkers to see. When she went to reassemble the gun, it appeared to be jammed.
As Loeb attempted to fix the jam, the gun accidentally went off. The bullet struck a metal panel, ricocheted and hit one of her coworkers in the leg. The women sustained a minor injury to her left calf, and Loeb suffered a small laceration on her hand.
If the dummy's bullet had hit someone else that person would have been SOL. The gun owner probably had no insurance or assets to cover the victim's injuries.

(133 posts)I always wonder about the psychological needs that are being fulfilled by someone who has chosen to carry (concealed or open). Anyone who feels they are expressing a fundamental 'Right' needs to understand the risks they inherit by taking such action.
As a First Responder, we operate under very strict rules. Rule #1, self protection, never go where there is risk. If firearms are found to be present, back out of the zone and call law enforcement.
In this situation, the EMT's would not have gone in until the police had secured any weapons and taken them into custody. During a emergency, (declared or not) going for a stroll with your trusty AR-15 will get you stopped, the weapon confiscated and some quality time explaining who you are and what you were thinking.
The fantasies of the doomsday prepper, intent on having sufficient weapons to repel either the Walking Dead, the local police or a squad of Marines, is just that, an unhinged fragment of an episode of an imaginary conspiracy.
