A drill this week to prep students in the event of a school shooting is getting harsh reviews from parents.
Cary-Grove High School Principal Jay Sargeant sent a letter detailing a 15- to 20-minute "code red simulation" on Wednesday that will include shooting blanks in hallways while students and teachers take cover.
"The purpose is not to shock kids and upset parents. Our purpose is to make sure that should something actually happen that we're prepared," said school spokesman Jeff Puma.
He added that it's not the first code red drill the district has conducted in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shootings. The first was done just four days after the Newtown, Conn., tragedy.

(25,183 posts)you tell your kids not to get into cars with strangers. A minority of children in such situations would be harmed, but why not prepare them for the worst that could happen?
It's about saving lives.

I couldn't yank my kid out fast enough if I heard they were doing this.

(3,419 posts)Pro RKBA and I don't think this is the right approach. Firing blanks would scare the hell out of the children. Drills are great to get the point across because we live in a sick society that these horrors do happen. Whats next fire Marshall Bill before fire drills?

(12,156 posts)Fired any closer than a couple of feet, they can be deadly. Blanks are NOT the same thing as caps in toy cap guns.
Code red drills are one thing, but the firing of guns, even with blanks, is quite another. Bad idea.

When I was in school & when I taught, sometimes they would block off exits so we'd be used to finding alternative ways out in case our normal route was not passable. But firing blanks?? WTF

(96,793 posts)to make sure the teachers count their kids when they get outside.
I find that pretty strange. But gun shots is a whole lot stranger.
