Pastor refuses to leave tip, writes "I give god 10%, why do you get 18%?"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/29/i-give-god-10-percent-tip-receipt-photo_n_2576595.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009

We've seen some ridiculous reasons not to leave a tip in our time (just scroll down for more egregious gratuities) but you could call this one the "holy grail" of outrageous receipts.

Redditor GateFlan posted the photo below showing how one Pastor dealt with an included tip of 18%, adding, "My mistake sir, I'm sure Jesus will pay for my rent and groceries."

The irony of it all is that we're pretty sure this would make any server lose faith in humanity.

Note that the 18% wasn't included in the total. It was a calculation but not binding until the diner filled in the total and signed the slip.
Pastor could have simply changed it to 10% and left it at that.

A forced tip of 18% was added to his bill. He balked at having almost 1/5th of the price of the meal added onto the bill and then being asked for yet more. That comes off as being pretty arrogant way to treat one's customers. Judging by his note, our pastor friend is a guy who understands arrogance.

I didn't know you could do that.

Still, I think my point about arrogance on the part of the restaurant managers is valid. They're asking for a bigger than average tip for the waitstaff because the restaurant pays less than minimum wage to their workers.

What's more, many of those upscale restaurants take out a portion of the tips left on the bills for the waiters, and keep it for themselves. Under Bush, the IRS started auditing waiters in the '00s so they could tax the tips. That's why, if I can, I always tip in cash and not off my credit card. Of course, with most places I go, 15% would be an insult, so I tip on the table rather than on the bill.

Yes, it's arrogance on the restaurant's part if this wasn't a very large party (in which case it's standard). This pastor could've been part of a party of twenty with individual checks. Most restaurants make very clear on the menu when a gratuity is automatically included.

And I'd love to blame Bush, but I had to pay taxes on a percentage of my sales when I worked in the service industry in the early 80s.
This is not a new thing - it's been around a long time.

The pastor was part of a group of 20. Restaurant policy (almost every restaurant has a similar policy for large groups) is party of 8 or more is automatic gratuity of 18%.

People need to keep in mind servers make $2.13/hr. Unless they have given poor service, tip them. If you don't want to tip at a restaurant, then get your food to-go.

Tip share...where the management takes a percentage of your sales out of your checkout to share between bussers bartenders and food runners.

There used to be a lot more problems with managers straight out skimming from waiters, but that is a lot more difficult since restaurants went to computers AND a lot of service staff started suing and winning. I does still happen, but it used to be rampant.

Unless as you were hired there was an agreement about deducting some for people bussing tables and the like.

BTW, how do say bus-boys gender neutral now? Are we going to "bus-persons" instead? Or like at the utility company at which I used to work the women working on and replacing meters called themselves meter-men just like the males. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with union designations for the jobs but it might have.

I dealt with more than a couple of rude and nasty people. Ones who thought leaving a tip was optional, no matter how well I served them or how much they ran my legs off. A few times I had people instead of money leave coupons, (I'm a waitress, I don't need $10 off my next car detail) and more than once someone left me a "Watchtower" pamphlet. My favorite, and most peculiar non-tip offering was a little stuffed blue bear that had "thank you" written on it's tummy. I had many a person try and split up the bill to avoid the mandatory gratuity, even though the establishment I worked at clearly stated it was a table of over 10, and not a ticket of over 10 entrees. So, I'm not going to say this isn't possible. Which of course doesn't mean it actually happened.

If I go out to eat, I never tip less than 20% if my server is at least trying what appears to be their best. I figure it into the cost of the meal before I decide I can afford to eat at any specific place. I refuse to ever be that 'jerk' who screws over a server working their ass.

in my area took a very large party to a local establishment, then stiffed the waitress (my niece). The owner called the VIP the next day, asked him if there was a problem with the service, etc. No, everything was great, food, drinks, service, they had a really good time, blah, blah, blah. The owner then responded, Well then, either give the waitress the tip she deserves or don't bother to come back. We don't need your business. Needless to say, his staff loved him. In fact, he closed the night my niece got married. Said it wouldn't be cost effective to stay open 'cause everybody would be at the wedding, including him!

Sunday lunch is the absolute worst time of the week if you're working in a restaurant.

The fundies coming out of church on Sunday morning, and pile into restaurants in large groups. They're horrible tippers, they're rude and nasty, and they take out their aggression on the wait-staff for daring to work on the Sabbath.

They are the reason why most restaurants have the policy of charging a mandatory gratuity of 18% for groups of eight or more. Waiters and waitresses have been stiffed too many times.

That's the religion of love and peace for you.
