Apparently we have no freaking hope of doing squat.

This post, now almost 90 minutes old ....

*** Senate Hearings on firearms legislation TODAY ! Here's your chance to be heard. ***

... has exactly three recs (including mine) as of this writing.

Meanwhile, Gomer Pyle's marriage and the woes plaguing Fox News are wildly popular.

If DU members can't even get this on the greatest page, we have no hope.

But another possibility could be that people are actually contacting their Senators without fiddling around with DU.

Maybe not straight down the middle but there is no consenus that I have noticed on DU either. For better or worse it seems that is where we are at, have been and seem to be staying.

Something like:

"Here is your chance to get back at those fuckers!"

or

Oh yeah! Time for our voices to be heard!"

or

"Free beer and porn! One day only!"

The gun debate is exhausting and it's particularly exhausting here on DU, a place where you wouldn't expect to encounter so many gun lovers.

Gomer Pyle's marriage is actually great news for progressives. So is Fox's low ratings. People need hope. It's hard to (wo)man the barricades 24/7 without hope. The fact that gay people are getting married gives me hope that we can move forward on other contentious issues as well.

It's drugs, it's craziness, it's the movies, it's video games. You point out that drugs, craziness, movies and video games are widely available in the UK, Australia, and Japan.

Then they bust out the gun porn pictures and call you ignorant.

Trust me, I know. But I did take action today, and I've been writing letters weekly. I started writing to my own representatives, but I live in New York State and my senators and rep are all on board. So I've switched to writing to Harry Reid, and to the leading Rethugs in both House and Senate.

I just don't fault people for jumping on pleasant news when it happens. We need it.

Like calling gun owners "Delicate Flowers" and talking about "The Precious."

I'm personally exhausted from responding to that kind of crap and calling for a modicum of respect all around -- or at least a moratorium on the name-calling.

in America. But all of the screaming and proposals I've seen are nothing but pacifiers that, in the end, will do nothing to change anything except increase the number of votes against Democrats.

I have something in the neighborhood of 300 trashed gun threads from GD, and that after auto-trashing key terms.

Talk to me about the near total disarmament, especially in law enforcement, and I'll listen and probably support it. But this nonsense of banning this type or that accessory will do nothing but cost elections.

80+ people a day are still going to be killed by firearms in America until we dare to look real solutions to our real problems.

Nowhere on the books will you find the statistics that matter.

How many murders in the US each year are the result of gang violence?

How many murders are the result of the illegal drug trade?

How many murders are committed by lost children who think it is okay to shoot people because they watch 8 hours of whatever tv they want after school because both parents are working so the family can afford 2 BMW's instead of at home being parents.

Tell me how we can turn 60 million families back into families.

Do you think that families with both working parents are doing it to afford luxuries? Many families have both parents working - often just to make ends meet (and as an aside, I don't think watching TV causes kids to go out and murder people).
