I come from a state that gets lots of bad storms too, Kansas. My reps all voted against aid as well. I think they are disgusting for doing so but then I did not vote for them. I expected nasty responses if something happens here this year but never did I expect to read the kind of stuff I just read above your post.

north of me. I live in Woodstock, south of Adairsville, but we have been under a tornado watch all day. Weather man on local TV channel just stated that there are no more severe weather threats now. But there are threats of flooding. That always worries me because I have experienced our 2009 flood.

The point that I wanted to make is that if people get real experience that government is not some evil entity out to take money from them, their views on the role of government in their lives may change. I remember the uncertainty that I felt when Sandy was heading for my state. I am normally calm, so my uncertainty then was surprising to me once I was through that event. A lot of people died in that storm and millions of people have not recovered a normal life routine yet.

That's the big problem with these storms.....they are so nerve wracking, your nerves just don't calm down for a long time. And, as long as it's raining, there's still danger present.

Since I'm up on a very high hill, I can watch the trees sway back and forth. Given that it has rained all day here, we're likely to lose trees tonight. The ground is saturated.

In fact, my teenage daughter just walked in from work very shaken up. There's a tree down in the road on the way home and she didn't see it until it was almost too late to avoid it. She's screaming at me.....we need better headlights!!!!!!

I have a feeling it's going to be ugly around here when the sun rises and we can assess the damage. There are flash floods in the area and lots of people have lost power. So far we still have ours. We lost the satellite signal for the tv for a good while but it's back for the moment. My sister and her husband have a little bridge across a creek at the end of their drive and it's flooded. My parents sit on a hill so they are okay. I haven't talked to my brother - I should probably call him.

I could have sworn I heard one wind gust growl earlier tonight. I'm down here in the southern central part of NC. We got a lot of wind damage and high gusts, a severe thunderstorm warning with winds at 65 mph, but no tornadoes, thankfully. I took my cat to my mother's house and we stayed there. She had it built to withstand 135 mph winds. Inside, you cannot hear the wind normally, but tonight, we could hear it and feel it. Even with all the extra insulation and other energy efficient extras she added to that house, that wind came through the house on a couple gusts, like literally through the house. That wind acted like the walls, windows, and doors were not even there.

Even now, that wind up in the sky sounds angry. it just keeps humming right along even now, this many hours after the squall line left. It is this loud humming sound that just doesn't stop. I wonder if it is ever going to stop. It is awful. I've seen horror movies that didn't have sound effects that creepy sounding.

We live out in the country and it's too dark (no street lights) to see if there's any damage. The flood lights on the house don't reach far enough. If any trees are damaged, hopefully they are on the edge of the property where the forest begins.

I have been there and done that. They will have so much paper work to do and their heads and hearts will be hurting so bad that it will make it ten times harder to do it.Many will be seeing what was and is, they will be physically ill due to it. They will be trying to find so sort of normal. They may not even know if they still have a job.

I pray their will be enough mental help on the ground for them. Those that are/were directly hit have shock and need pros to spot it. I wish someone spotted mine before it came to a head.

We spent most of the night and early morning without power. Too many trees down overnight for them to keep up with.

You have to admire these guys who go out in the middle of the night, bitter cold, in rain and storms, and 25+mph winds and work like hell to restore people's power.

The only ice on the roads seems to be the standing puddles from all the rain. Drove my daughter to school this morning because she didn't want to drive alongside those swaying trees.

We just had high winds all night long in the 25-35mph range. And, since the ground was saturated the tree roots just have no staying power. Almost every tree down has the root ball intact but out of the ground.

Part of it is simply that the pines here grow very tall, and have foliage only at the top, making them top heavy to begin with.

Given that we've had drought conditions for a few years now, a lot of the trees are just in a weakened state.

Metro Atlanta and the rest of north Georgia remained under a wind advisory Thursday as strong winds gusting to over 40 mph hampered clean-up efforts in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly tornado outbreak.

Georgia Power reported early Thursday that about 8,800 customers were still without power statewide, with 5,600 of those in metro Atlanta and 2,500 in northwest Georgia.

Terri Statham, spokeswoman for Georgia Electric Membership Corporation, said at 5:30 a.m. that the number of EMC customers without power had been reduced from 14,000 to fewer than 5,000.

I am open to suggestions though, when red state congress people vote to deny storm stricken relief to major population centers, i.e. Staten Island, and they play politics with the relief, what are we to do?

I arrived in So. Cal. at MCRD San Diego in August of 1973. Ronnie was gone. We were more Jerry. Anyway.

My congressman is Buck McKeon. He is a douche, a Republican, and is in charge of the House Armed Services Commitee. This whitebread district would never vote him out. I have worked for the opposition yet this city is Rethug brain dead!

I sympathise. It makes me nuts.

I hope you all are safe and undamaged, but we need to put major pressure on these legislators when they make human, American suffering, a way to make the President look bad by way of budgetary issues.
