There are search teams out right now, going door to door looking for people.

It's getting dark and it's still raining.

Right now, there are lives at stake. Lives are shattered. Homes are shattered. People are shattered.

Politics can wait, can't they?

Uh, No!

Like gun massacres, the time is now!

BTW, Sandy victims are freezing their asses off in trashed homes.

How long would you like to wait?

Nothing personal, until it was made personal by the Republican asshats!

The red states vote for these extremists and we all suffer as a result.

And yes, lives are shattered along with homes and people. What makes red states better than others?

What will their response be when we get the big one in California?

Please bear that in mind when you feel compelled to express pleasure in individuals' misery - which is exactly what you did in this post. Rush Limbaugh would be proud.

What the government did with Sandy was/is horrid. However, punishing those people, some who did not even vote for those in power, is even worse!

We are talking about human beings. This is no time to play politics. Just like Sandy is/was no time to play politics. There will be more storms and we all must pull together.

after reading the first posts. I am sorry. I could not believe I was reading that here. Sounded like some other places I hear about but would never go read because those kinds of comments are so far from decent it would just bother me forever.

I come from a state that gets lots of bad storms too, Kansas. My reps all voted against aid as well. I think they are disgusting for doing so but then I did not vote for them. I expected nasty responses if something happens here this year but never did I expect to read the kind of stuff I just read above your post.

I hope you are all right. I am truly sorry you had to read that here on this site. After being here for so long I know I can expect some stuff I don't like but this was more than I was ready to read. Take care.

I doubt there is a single Democrat or liberal on this site who voted for these people therefore we are not accountable for the idiocy of these representatives. Even so, human kindness seems to be lacking as opposed to needing vengeance for politics. I simply cannot abide the disgusting attitude I am seeing in this thread. It disheartens me and makes me angry. Who cares who voted for who in a tragedy?

Still, the bashing of the South is horrible and most times very elitist and that never helps when you are trying to change things.

You've got some more rain headed for you, and the winds are going to pick up pretty bad again - and cold, cold air. With the ground so saturated, trees are coming down, so those are going to pose the biggest danger to life and property tonight.

they should get it, regardless of who they voted for. The point that I wanted to make is that if people get real experience that government is not some evil entity out to take money from them, their views on the role of government in their lives may change. But, on the other hand, government brought about rural electrification, internet service, mail service and medical care, but people that benefit from those services still hate "big" government.

That's the big problem with these storms.....they are so nerve wracking, your nerves just don't calm down for a long time. And, as long as it's raining, there's still danger present.

Since I'm up on a very high hill, I can watch the trees sway back and forth. Given that it has rained all day here, we're likely to lose trees tonight. The ground is saturated.

In fact, my teenage daughter just walked in from work very shaken up. There's a tree down in the road on the way home and she didn't see it until it was almost too late to avoid it. She's screaming at me.....we need better headlights!!!!!!

We lost the satellite signal for the tv for a good while but it's back for the moment. My sister and her husband have a little bridge across a creek at the end of their drive and it's flooded. My parents sit on a hill so they are okay. I haven't talked to my brother - I should probably call him.

Thu Jan 31, 2013, 02:25 AM
Jan 2013

I could have sworn I heard one wind gust growl earlier tonight. I'm down here in the southern central part of NC. We got a lot of wind damage and high gusts, a severe thunderstorm warning with winds at 65 mph, but no tornadoes, thankfully. I took my cat to my mother's house and we stayed there. She had it built to withstand 135 mph winds. Inside, you cannot hear the wind normally, but tonight, we could hear it and feel it. Even with all the extra insulation and other energy efficient extras she added to that house, that wind came through the house on a couple gusts, like literally through the house. That wind acted like the walls, windows, and doors were not even there.

Even now, that wind up in the sky sounds angry. it just keeps humming right along even now, this many hours after the squall line left. It is this loud humming sound that just doesn't stop. I wonder if it is ever going to stop. It is awful. I've seen horror movies that didn't have sound effects that creepy sounding.

it sounds like a growl sometimes. We have a break right now with another line coming in within the hour.

We live out in the country and it's too dark (no street lights) to see if there's any damage. The flood lights on the house don't reach far enough. If any trees are damaged, hopefully they are on the edge of the property where the forest begins.

Take care - hope the damage isn't too bad.

They will be trying to find so sort of normal. They may not even know if they still have a job.

I pray their will be enough mental help on the ground for them. Those that are/were directly hit have shock and need pros to spot it. I wish someone spotted mine before it came to a head.

Those that can go and volunteer, please do. They will need it, even if it is a friendly ear.

Everyone in the path, let us know you're OK.

We spent most of the night and early morning without power. Too many trees down overnight for them to keep up with.

You have to admire these guys who go out in the middle of the night, bitter cold, in rain and storms, and 25+mph winds and work like hell to restore people's power.

The only ice on the roads seems to be the standing puddles from all the rain. Drove my daughter to school this morning because she didn't want to drive alongside those swaying trees.

Thu Jan 31, 2013, 11:40 AM

We just had high winds all night long in the 25-35mph range. And, since the ground was saturated the tree roots just have no staying power. Almost every tree down has the root ball intact but out of the ground.

Part of it is simply that the pines here grow very tall, and have foliage only at the top, making them top heavy to begin with.

Given that we've had drought conditions for a few years now, a lot of the trees are just in a weakened state.

I wouldn't say we should deny anyone aid, but running their reps noses in it is appropriate.

Metro Atlanta and the rest of north Georgia remained under a wind advisory Thursday as strong winds gusting to over 40 mph hampered clean-up efforts in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly tornado outbreak.

Georgia Power reported early Thursday that about 8,800 customers were still without power statewide, with 5,600 of those in metro Atlanta and 2,500 in northwest Georgia.

Terri Statham, spokeswoman for Georgia Electric Membership Corporation, said at 5:30 a.m. that the number of EMC customers without power had been reduced from 14,000 to fewer than 5,000.

We've only been under severe and threatening weather for the last 24 hours. Time to dole out the punishment while we're still freezing after a night with freezing temps and no heat!

They have to look for those that are trapped or dead. There is power and communications to get back on line. There is/will be medical attention to be given. There is need for supplies in the affected areas.

Let's save the politics for when the humanitarian needs are met.

I did not start it to be an ass. I did not start it to even remotely suggest that any aid be witheld.

That wasn't the point.

I am open to suggestions though, when red state congress people vote to deny storm stricken relief to major population centers, i.e. Staten Island, and they play politics with the relief, what are we to do?

I arrived in So. Cal. at MCRD San Diego in August of 1973. Ronnie was gone. We were more Jerry. Anyway.

My congressman is Buck McKeon. He is a douche, a Republican, and is in charge of the House Armed Services Commitee. This whitebread district would never vote him out. I have worked for the opposition yet this city is Rethug brain dead!

I sympathise. It makes me nuts.

I hope you all are safe and undamaged, but we need to put major pressure on these legislators when they make human, American suffering, a way to make the President look bad by way of budgetary issues.

Help for the needy should not be held hostage to anything! Period!

Now, as Ed says, "Let's get to work!"

Thank you for giving those of us in the south a place to check on each other and make sure everyone was safe.

I repeat, however, that you'll have to leave your politics out of our concern for each other.

Oh, and BTW, thank you oh so much for unleashing the horror of Ronald Fucking Reagan on the entire world!

I was at Summerfest when George Carlin was busted. Ya just can't say those words. I wasn't a registered California voter at the time so Reagan isn't on me. Sorry.

We may never agree, but politics was put in play by the NO votes for anyones emergency aid.

Those votes came from recipients of past aid.

Please tell me how this isn't political.

I find this deplorable for what its worth

I grew up in Chicago. But, you take every opportunity to bash those of us who live in the south.

If I own Woodall, you own St. Ronnie.

See how turnabout is fair play in your world?
