Boy Scouts re policy change

The Boy Scouts of America is accepting public feedback about ending its ban on gay Scouts and leaders. Its Board will vote by Feb. 6. Let's FLOOD their lines with thousands of calls. (Believe me, the other side's busy, too...)

If you call 972-580-2330, a rep asks: "Are you FOR or against the change in policy?" Just say FOR and you're done! Can't get thru? Email nationalsupportcenter@scouting.org

Make the call, click LIKE and then SHARE this message. Each call can make the difference. Thanks, friends.

Just called!

the right wingers are out in full force on this and we as liberals and progressives need to have our voices heard

I've seen this posted on a couple of gay websites but that's about it.

It sounds like their lines are being overloaded.

I also got a read response to my e-mail that says that Teresa Condon [Teresa.Condon@scouting.org] did not read my e-mail.

A great step in the right direction. But troops are still free to ban gay scouts and scout leaders ant their discretion. So the national ban has been eliminated, but the ability to ban is still in place.

It is a minor step in the right direction. That is not easy to say considering the fact that the new policy, if it goes into effect, is bigoted.

Scouting is so popular among many families - including many gay families - that there are currently many local troops that tacitly ignore the national ban on gay membership and gay leaders. If the national group allowed individual troops to determine their membership, I believe that we would see a wave of openness across the nation, with the pockets of bigotry in the usual places where there are going to be pockets of bigotry anyway.

For a private group, I think that this is actually a big step. I hope that they take it.

It's good to hear that this change is being considered but it does make me wonder. In today's age of paranoia, how many people supporting this would allow their son to go on a weekend camping trip with a gay scout master? How many additional safety measures would be added to those camping trips? How many parents will be grilling their kids upon return? Those that would let their sons go, would they also let their daughters go for a girl-scout weekend trip with a straight male troop leader (My daughters current troop leader often talks of her best den mother was a friends father)?
