(43,185 posts)It's sad to see her in that condition. As I noted in another thread, I first remember hearing about Gabby Giffords in a radio interview on NPR just two days before she was shot, and I was impressed how intelligent and well-spoken she was. Hopefully, with continued therapy, she will be able to return to that level.

(43,185 posts)I was reading the book she and her husband wrote about the experience. Gutsy stuff on her part.
I had never heard about Gabby Giffords until listening to an interview of her on NPR. She seemed bright, intelligent and full of enthusiasm. Two days later she was shot.

(42,770 posts)have been really wondering if her thinking ability is the same way too. Or, if she is as bright as ever but just can't speak

(51,666 posts)were spot on. She just has trouble with the physical act of speaking, I think. And aphasia, of course, where the thought is formed but the words don't come out of the mouth.
I think her mind is just fine.
ETA: I am sure that she has some memory issues, but I meant that her ability to reason and act on her thoughts is fine.

(42,770 posts)cognitive skills too. I haven't read her book, but think he husband wrote most of it and there is a short chapter of hers at the end. If she was ok, she probably would be writing some profound op ed pieces on gun control.
I tell you one thing...she looks fantastic.

"Thank you for inviting me here today. This is an important conversation for our children, for our communities, for Democrats and Republicans. Speaking is difficult, but I need to say something important. Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying. Too many children. We must do something. It will be hard but the time is now. You must act. Be bold. Be courageous. Americans are counting on you. Thank you."

(43,185 posts)It's just "Ukraine", not "the Ukraine." (Sorry, as I mentioned on another thread, my Ukrainian mother would disown me if I didn't always point that out.)

(56,582 posts)And why is it "the Gambia"?
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,185 posts)But upon obtaining independence in 1991, Ukrainian officials made a concerted effort to reiterate the use of "Ukraine" as opposed to "the Ukraine" in diplomatic settings.

(15,064 posts)the cities are full of them. Then the statement was made that 1/6th of all people in prison were mentally ill. Really? Then why were they not let off on insanity pleas or committed to a prison for the criminally insane? Or, did they go insane in prison because they were incarcerated? So far it looks like nothing will be done about regulation and there will be more murder and mass killings to make the populace buy more guns so more killing can be done. The gun manufacturers are hard at work here.
Money talks and blood money makes a profit by making people bleed to death.

(56,582 posts)Depending on the state, you have to either be incapable of understanding right and wrong or the consequences of your actions, or to have no control over your actions. And if you can't assist your own defense you can't be tried, but that's legally different.
It's usually about developmental problems rather than mental illness.
