House women legislators were advised Tuesday to take security precautions in preparation for a scheduled vote on a bill crafted to make it difficult for Kansas teacher unions to collect dues and political action committee donations from educators.
House Speaker Ray Merrick, R-Stilwell, set for House floor debate Wednesday controversial House Bill 2023, which seeks to block members of professional organizations, such as the Kansas-National Education Association, from benefitting from automatic payroll deductions if the money would be earmarked for political activities.
"Statehouse security is mindful that a hot-button issue will be debated tomorrow and there will be advocacy groups from both sides in the Statehouse," Merrick said. "Regardless, we expect the debate tomorrow to be civil and respectful from both sides of the aisle."
Freshman Rep. Stephanie Clayton, an Overland Park Republican, said women legislators were urged to avoid wearing their official name tags in the Statehouse and to use a private stairwell to reach the House floor.
