@MickWoof Red States looking more & more like NKorea. Loaded down with weapons, no healthcare, education or food, & women silenced.

(327 posts)just like N Korea, I would not have a problem with it.
The problem results when they come out of their red states and force their nonsense on the rest of us.

(61,695 posts)Is a minority of us in red states who despise their bullshit, but they want to force it on us, too. We are doing everything we can to resist and throw up legal challenges, but the gop do outnumber us.
And don't tell me to move. I have a home and family here. Our work is here, too.
stultusporcos
(327 posts)Good luck with your choice.

(61,695 posts)And for some of us, who have a special needs child, having family available is a necessity. You can call it a choice, but the reality is that without family, our lives would derail. Some choice.

(327 posts)I am sorry about your situation and it sounds like only a federal solution will assist with your childs needs because your state is not interested in helping those who need the most help.
It would be nice if the Democrats in Congress had at least some power in Congress to help those who need the most help.
Have you looked at what whout be available to you if you moved, you may not have to depend on family.

(541 posts)It's often very difficult to move. Where we chose to live often involves family ties, jobs, where we grew up and what we are familiar with, etc. not just politics. Still, I know living under Republican legislators can be very difficult.

(24,692 posts)Repression anywhere is a bad thing. Just because it does not affect me directly right now is not a good reason for me to ignore it and go about my own life. (They came for the Jews and I said nothing because I'm not Jewish, ...)
If it were me being repressed I would appreciate the rest of the world trying to do something about it rather than saying "At least that's not me living in that red state (or in North Korea)." There may or may not be anything effective that others can do for me at a particular point in time but I would at least appreciate that they did not just accept my fate and move on.
I agree that red state republicans exporting their repression (as they are fond of doing) to the rest of us makes things even worse than keeping it within the borders of their own states. (Similarly Kim and his buddies would love to export their wonderful style of government southward which would make things even worse.) Rather than writing off victims of repression in red states or North Korea it is in our long term interests to look for ways to support them. That may be difficult (or even impossible) to do effectively right now but we should not stop caring.

(156 posts)Change just like the federal goverment does all over the world today?
The people of the state need to help themselves first, why are they not in the streets?

to do effectively right now but we should not stop caring."
Others would take that to mean that we should not stop looking for ways to help the repressed even if we can't do anything effective to do for them right now. You are very perceptive.
"Caring" does not mean "invading", it means caring about those who are repressed and helping if you can figure out a way to do it.
To a typical neocon, it might seem logical that if you 'care' you must be willing to 'invade' to prove that you 'care'. Fortunately, you and I do not fall into that category. For liberals caring and searching for a way to help those who are repressed (even if 'invading' is off the table) is part of who we are, IMHO.
Prior to the Civil Rights era, I don't remember liberals taking the position that Blacks in the South needed to help themselves first (a version of the 'bootstrap' philosophy) before we would consider any 'caring' that we might extend to them. You are right in the sense that effective civil rights change did not occur until Blacks 'took to the streets', but there were Northern liberals who did 'invade' the South (freedom riders and others) prior to that. And Eisenhower did 'invade' Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 with the National Guard to force school desegregation.

(22,000 posts)Nothing could really compare to how bad North Korea is. I've done extensive reading and heard testimony from refugees that were in gulags. I'm sure there are countries in the Middle East that are closer to dictatorships that would be a better example.

(22,000 posts)I'm saying I don't think the comparison is way out there. Have you read books on North Korea or White Papers on what have been done to refugees or heard the testimony of refugees? The media in the US doesn't do justice in terms of telling Americans what is going on there.
Go read a bit and then come back and talk to me about the comparison.

(11,360 posts)Their social agenda is almost identical, and both groups hate America's president. No rights for women or gays, religion in charge of government - what exactly is the difference? And who exactly is America's #1 enemy? The far-off Taliban or the gun-toting Obama hater next door?
