I have a right wing-nut friend on FaceBook saying today that there were four "hand guns" used in the school based on an MSNBC news video
http://video.today.msnbc.msn.com/today/50208495#50208495.
This appears to be a news report on December 15 so I think it's dated. The video does say there is an update to the story but I can't link to it for some reason.
I originally heard a Bushmaster rifle was one of the weapons used in the school along with two hand guns and a shotgun was left in the trunk.
Does anyone really know?

(19,877 posts)ETA: Only the Bushmaster was used but 3 guns were removed from the school.
All by automatic weapon per the CT state police.

(297 posts)About half way down. I am pretty sure it says all were shot with a Bushmaster .223.

"The veteran medical examiner told reporters that the victims had all been identified and their bodies released. In what appeared to be an uncomfortable moment for Carver, he said all of the victims he had examined had all been shot by a Bushmaster .223 caliber assault rifle, one of at least two weapons Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old suspected shooter, used to commit one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history."

(43 posts)An AR-15 Bushmaster and two handgus were used in the shooting. A shotgun was found in the trunk of his car, but was not used. The story on MSNBC was later changed. Snopes has a full accounting debunking several myths about Sandy Hook here:

(8,492 posts)...it still doesn't matter. They were all murdered with bullets.
Handgun, rifle, assault rifle, shotgun, whatever. They're all dead.
My support for the 2nd Amendment is waning to the point of near invisibility. At least until both sides stop flinging poo at each other and start discussing serious regulations, restrictions, punishments and training requirements.

(978 posts)I'm just trying to counter misinformation being spewed from some of my right-wing friends. It seems they create their own reality to fit the outcome they want to believe. Unfortunately, I can't cut them off completely since I work with them.
But I agree on "they're all dead".
Since 1968, 1,348,000 people have been killed by guns. That's insane. It seems like the 2 Amendment is backfiring on it own citizens.

(8,492 posts)My RW friends all have tunnel vision. But, with a little patience, I've been able to get them to discuss things logically. Once you scrape away the irrational fear and paranoia, they agree that more needs to be done. But, they'll only say that 'off the record'.

(14,177 posts)It wasn't the pro regulation crowd that made it go away either. It was the digging their feet in crowd that keeps explaining why this regulation or that regulation won't work and the ones that want to argue about clip size and how quick they can be changed. They convinced me that limiting clip capacity won't work, that gun manufacturers will find a way around bans, and that guns really are still more dangerous than video games. So, the only solution is a near total ban.

(15,689 posts)Assault rifle? Glock? Who the fuck cares. I say we "grab" them all and let God sort them out. Until America commits to reducing -drastically - the numbers of guns in circulation - in all hands - we will continue to slaughter each other.

(26,549 posts)And they use the erroneous news reports as proof that the whole thing was a massive conspiracy designed to take their guns.

It was not an assault rifle or assault weapon per Connecticut law. The law enforcement official was correct in his description.

Just before they died, I'll bet they laughed and said, that 'moran' probably thinks it's an assault rifle.
