From Colorado! Civil Union bill is moving forward!

SB11, the bill to create legal same-sex civil unions in Colorado, passed a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee today, 3-2.

It's looking good this year! Last year, House Speaker McNulty cock-blocked the bill last year with his little filibuster that derailed a whole bunch of vital state business last year. This year, he is Minority Leader McNulty, and Speaker Pat Steadman (first gay Speaker of the House in Colorado) and his fellow Democrats are working damned hard to make civil unions a reality!

I'm stoked!

Oh, and the right-wingers testifying against the bill were especially batshit today.

Back in 2006, a same-sex marriage ban amendment passed in Colorado.

Which means Colorado's General Assembly cannot directly override it without putting another amendment on the ballot.

But they can do civil unions. So that's the plan.

Besides, hopefully same-sex-marriage bans will get struck by SCOTUS as being in violation of the 14th fairly soon.

Democrats now own both houses, so McNulty and his fellow rethugs can't cockblock like they did last session.
