False report of campus gunman brings lockdown at U-Va.’s College at Wise

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, in far southwestern Virginia, was put on lockdown for about two hours Wednesday night after a student reported seeing a gunman. The student later told investigators that the incident was a hoax, Virginia State police said.

The student called 911 shortly before 9 p.m. and told authorities he saw a man with a gun on campus, said Corinne Geller, a state police spokeswoman. School police and other law enforcement officials from the area responded to the scene and shut down the campus, near the Kentucky border.

GRRR!! That student should be suspended for the semester at least in addition to other criminal penalty for exploiting the recent violent climate of the nation to scare his campus.

I assumed a gunman on a campus was a mass murderer. I googled the story and found one dated 25 minutes ago saying the campus is locked down due to a reported gunman.

People are on edge and sometimes they see what they believe is a firearm and report it, rightly so.
Could have been anything.

but even they haven't confirmed, just reported what is coming to them so far.

WISE, Va. (WYMT) - According to the University of Virginia at Wise official website, the campus is no longer on lockdown.

The lockdown was lifted at 10:57pm.

15. Yes...very tense hour in my house.

My nephew is a freshman at UVA-Wise. Information was hard to get. I got more info from Twitter than from the news. Thank god for kids and social media.

I cannot even begin to tell you range of emotions that have gone through my family in the past 2 hours. I'm exhausted by keyed up.

17. we had a false report of a gunman at a local high school a few days ago

The student was arrested. I'm not sure what happened after that. People that do that should have to pay the money it takes for the police to respond to what they believe is a credible threat.
