Ready for an invasion of Africa? Cluster of headlines warn us.

British PM Cameron, with wonderful foresight, has put the world on notice:

"decades-long struggle against Islamist terrorism in north Africa"
he declares.

Meanwhile,

West turns sights on threat in the desert
EU and US to co-operate with local governments to destroy militant 'corridor of terror'

The rebel assault on the gas installation at In Amenas will accelerate international efforts to destroy a "corridor of terror" Western governments believe Islamic militants are establishing across swathes of North and West Africa.

Officials in Europe and Washington are to increase assistance, including intelligence-sharing, military aid and training to states identified as at risk from al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Because....
Grave fears' for energy industry in North Africa
The al-Qa'ida attack on foreign workers at the Algerian gas plant has made Western companies nervous

BP may be forced to reconsider further gas exploration in North Africa as a result of the Algerian hostage crisis, fearing more targeted attacks against its workers in the region, industry sources said yesterday.

The British energy giant is Algeria's largest investor in a country that is the third-largest supplier of gas to the EU.
BP, already a major investor in Libya, had been granted new gas licences in the country days before
Islamic terrorists took over the In Amenas gas plant near the Algerian/Libyan border.

Do I smell Ralph Reed on another crusade, since his project in Iraq didn't work out so well?

They don't want terrorism and hostage-taking to hamper the foreign-invested oil industry. They must have decided that a careful, drawn-out rescue effort would send the wrong message: that westerners were important to them (therefore making oil-industry westerners even more of a lucrative kidnapping/hostage target). Still a pretty harsh "solution" to the crisis, though.

As usual, we want the maghreb to keep oil flowing (though this is less important as our own tappable reserves keep expanding) and we want the rest of Africa to just not exist in the first place.

...with the removal of a major road block to the IMF, the Global Oil Corporations,
and the World Banks.

” For all his dictatorial megalomania, Gaddafi is a committed pan-African - a fierce defender of African unity. Libya was not in debt to international bankers. It did not borrow cash from the International Monetary Fund for any "structural adjustment". It used oil money for social services - including the Great Man Made River project, and investment/aid to sub-Saharan countries. Its independent central bank was not manipulated by the Western financial system. All in all a very bad example for the developing world.”

18. Mali and its mining sector: A focus on gold, diamonds, and uranium exploration
Sun Jan 20, 2013, 05:22 PM
Jan 2013

Mali has abundant mineral wealth. Gold has become Mali’s second-largest export after cotton and has emerged as a leading export for the African country since 1999. Mali is West Africa’s second largest gold producer with an estimated 2009 output of 1.6 million ounces, or 49 tonnes, and total gold wealth is estimated at 350 tonnes.(5)

Several companies in Mali are currently carrying out uranium exploration in the Falea and Gao regions, where the uranium potential is estimated to be 5,200 tonnes. Furthermore, Mali has the potential to develop diamond explorations. In the Kayes administrative region, also known as “Mining region 1”, 30 kimberlitic pipes have been discovered of which eight show traces of diamonds. Diamonds have also been picked up in the Sikasso administrative region, in southern Mali.(6)
