Apparently the visitors to DC for the Inauguration are having problems with the escalators:

moving walkways, telling people to keep right if they're standing, and keep left if walking. Don't they have such signs on the escalators in DC?

Expecting people to automatically understand such things is expecting too much. People need directions when they come to unfamiliar places.

apparently the official position of WMATA is that it's best for people to stand on the escalators (and there are limits as to what signs can be near escalators).
