Obama SOTU speech said he will make the military use more renewable energy. Hartmann points out that this is brilliant because its a non-partisan way to get the US off oil.
It would be impossible to get the Greedy Oil Plutocrats Congress to pass a renewable energy program of any size but they wont be able to stop it if it for the military and this will scale up production to make it more affordable for the rest of the US citizenry.

Fusion, anyone? HINT HINT.
edit- well, fusion doesn't apply. But I want to see half our military budget going towards fusion research.

(12,681 posts)There are already three bases (probably more) I know of that have large solar facilities on buildings and as "covers" for parking lots that have paid for themselves since they were put up. An average military base uses thousands of kilowats a day of electricity - to an average annual cost into the millions of dollars a year for most bases. Spend 2 or 3 million on putting in a 5 - 10 thousand kilowatt solar system along with the use of energy-saving devices, and the operating cost to taxpayers goes way, way down a year later.
Plus, they can "sell back" energy to the local infrastructure grid, saving civilian consumers and the grid itself energy and dollars, if the local utility is reasonably honest in their billing practices.
