(7,367 posts)"the mentally ill are far more likely to be Victims of crime". It's a start in the right direction. Of course it would have been much better if he'd given the other fact that goes with that one: that the mentally ill are no more violent than the rest of the population. I suspect he knows this and realizes that peoples heads would explode. I am sure he knows discrimination when he sees it.
A bold statement given the drum beat against the mentally ill by both pols and pundits (and so-called TV experts)
The real problem isn't the mentally ill. The vast majority of these horrible crimes are commited by people who are simply evil. They are fully aware of what they are doing. They are methodical, devious, and focus on maximum possible carnage. That sure doesn't sound like anything in the DSM.

It's sad, but I can't take these sick f***s any more.
Any yes, it is relevant to this thread.
Holding back on slashing them with replies on FB, I've posted "demandaplan.org" and "facebook/sandyhookpromise" in response.
By the way: I had sent my Congressman (repub) a comment to support gun control. His response to me was the usual pablum.
I WROTE BACK! Just as my Pres said! I held my Congressman's feet to the fire on this - he is former law enforcement; I challenged him as to why someone who knows better, former cop, would think it's OK to have assault weapons on our streets!
Thanks you, Sir, indeed.

(19,497 posts)And as there is not an executive order mandating registration or confiscation those who were worried about those things should be relieved.
My concern that the frenzy to "do SOMETHING" will be an ineffective something and if/when there is another tragedy a lot of political capital will have been wasted. The president is not to blame. I see nothing objectionable about his policy decisions but there are those within his camp who would -- perhaps -- better serve his purposes if they were to manage their expectations.
Ironically, I've caught quite a bit of flak for suggestion tha the violently disturbed be treated as if they were violently disturbed. The President's policy decisions seemt to accord with what i was hoping to see vis-a-vis reporting etc. I'm curious as to what my detractors think.

(35 posts)The idea is to chip away at the problem a little at a time.
To do nothing in the face of all the recent mass shootings is unacceptable.
Taking preventive measures that will help (and the Pres and Vice Pres took a lot of measures today) reduce the chance of mass shootings is the right thing to do.
If these could have been done so much earlier than today, then Sandy Hook might never have happened.
So many naysayers out there!
I think that its got to be a handful of Machievellian types that are trolling all the online forums, trying to slow any positive step to reducing gun violence.
