NJ Dem: GOP's Christie may have 'prayed' for storm
By By ANGELA DELLI SANTI | Associated Press 22 hrs ago.. .
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) Republican Gov. Chris Christie may have "prayed" for Superstorm Sandy because it has provided political cover for his failed economic policies, the Democratic leader of the state Senate said Monday.
Senate President Stephen Sweeney, the state's most powerful elected Democrat and a possible contender for his party's nomination for governor, said Christie's jobs plan before the late October storm was a disaster and now the reconstruction will provide an economic boost through thousands of new construction jobs.
He said Sandy, which killed people in 10 states but hit New York and New Jersey the hardest, flooding neighborhoods, knocking out power and destroying homes, helped hide the failings of Christie's first term, including persistently high unemployment and housing foreclosures.
"His jobs package is a hurricane," Sweeney said during a press conference on Monday, the day before Christie was set to deliver his State of the State message. "I guess he prayed a lot and got lucky because a storm came."
Sweeney immediately apologized for the remark.
The governor's office and leading Republicans pounced on Sweeney anyway.
"No one prayed for what New Jersey has endured," Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said. "This is politics at its worst."

Talk about misconstruing words. Sweeney seems to be insinuating that Christie was praying because of his job package failure, not that he actually prayed for a damned storm to hit. There are much more urgent things to be arguing over than choices of words.

(11,607 posts)1. He sounds like the Republicans after the election
Who said that President Obama only won because of the storm.
My response to them was: aren't many of you Christian conservatives? If the president only got re-elected because of the storm, are you saying he was endorsed by g-d?

(32,731 posts)2. "His jobs package is a hurricane" is a fair point, but he shouldn't mention prayer, motives, etc.
Hopefully the overall point he was trying to make hasn't been taken off the table due to sloppy delivery.

(16,113 posts)4. This sounds like just another one of those situations where
if a repuke said it about a dem, we'd be going nuts, but since it's the other way around, we "know what he really meant".
I think the statement itself could be interpreted either way.

He had a valid point under this, but it will be ignored because of his sensationalism.
He should issue an apology - a sincere one - as soon as he can.
