Is Mr. Hagel standing in the way of profit to be made in The Middle East?

The more research we do,the more suspicious this becomes.

(6,262 posts)Not thrilled with Hagel, but his main plus IMO is a more realistic approach to Israel, and just possibly a more receptive attitude to Pentagon budget cuts.
Really do not like many things about him, especially on LBGT, but a titular Rethug could help curtail that massive budget in Defense and thus ease the fiscal strains on the most needy.
If more resources for the rest of us comes from the Hagel appointment --- get over it, Israel.

(20,783 posts)was that he is not in thrall to the Israeli lobby. I can guess that that is a big reason for the opposition.

(3,502 posts)He pushed back at the neocons. That's why he's not a Republican in good standing right now. Never mind that he was proven right about that, over and over. That's the best thing about him as a choice for this office. In other times his conservatism might make him a very problematic choice. Like if we were busy propping up brutal dictators in Latin America. Not at all sure where he'd stand on that. But he's very sensible on the ME, which IS where our issues like right now.

(NEW YORK, Dec. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AJC is dismayed by today's New York Times op-ed article, available online, "Don't Let Pro-Israel Extremists Sink Chuck Hagel." (The author of the Times op-ed is James Besser, a former Washington correspondent for the New York Jewish Week.)
AJC: "There are good reasons to be concerned about Hagel in the Pentagon... The Washington Post Editorial board opposes his nomination."
Well there you have it. If the WaPo editorial board opposes Hagel nomination, I'm for it.
