If I had gone to college, I probably would have partied my way back out in my
freshman year and never gone back. I had no discipline and was headed for the
life of a loser -- jail/prison was not a longshot for my future.
.
I enlisted (almost accidentally) while still 17 and my attitude is what got me
through basic training (the only was you can BEAT me is if I ALLOW you to
beat me).
.
In the Army, I learned focus and purpose and coping skills that would never have
come my way otherwise.

For years, I reluctantly suggested this path to the parents of teenagers much
like I had been -- in the hopes that it would teach them similar lessons.

Because of the way our leaders (ALL our leaders) have played fast and loose
with the lives of young people nowadays -- it's been many years since I have
done anything but encourage avoiding military service.

(149,694 posts)I think there are more than a few homeless, hopeless vets on the streets now...
And if something major isn't done, there will be a lot more.
I think the way we treat (or rather, don't treat) our vets is just criminal.
I am glad your military service helped you grow up.

(3,576 posts)It behooves the military to have a large supply of poor and not very well educated young people. By the way, Albert Einstein had the same opinion as you now have.

(2,672 posts)I see homeless vets asking for money from homemade cardboard signs and I always give what I can. It pisses me off big time that the bloated pentagon won't use money to help homeless vets. Over the years the pentagon has gotten trillions of taxpayer dollars but how much goes to homeless vets? Generals would rather live like kings, with staff at their command, living in mansions paid for by us while homeless vets live in the streets. What a disgrace, what a shame.
