The Steubenville Rape Case's Party Host Has His Sports Scholarship Under Review

The Steubenville rape case is rapidly broadening in blame to include more of what the hackers at Anonymous and LocalLeaks have dubbed the "Rape Crew," as Kent State University became the second college to publicly acknowledge it's paying close attention. The school is now reviewing the status of an accepted student athlete who played for the Steubenville High football team — and may have hosted the party where the alleged rape took place.

On Saturday, the day after Ohio State University made note of Michael Nodianos and his viral video commenting on the alleged incident, Kent State posted the following message on its Facebook page: "University leaders are aware of the developing investigation in Steubenville, and we are gathering information from the proper authorities." And over the weekend, Kent State officials told a local Patch site that "gathering information" means they're reviewing the status of a future student. "We understand the severity and the seriousness of the allegations, and as we collect more information we will take appropriate steps as warranted," a spokesman told Patch. "We are now following the developments from Steubenville very closely."

The future student in question is Charlie Keenan, a current senior at Steubenville High School. Keenan signed a letter of intent to wrestle for Kent State on scholarship in November — he played on the same football team as Trent Mays and Malik Richmond, who are currently facing charges as minors for raping a 16-year-old girl. (Mays's lawyer has moved to get his case postponed past its February 13 preliminary hearing date for ""what we perceive as threats to individuals.&quot According to the much discussed Steubenville Files put together by Anonymous and LocalLeaks, "One of the parties to which the unconscious victim of this horrible crime was dragged to took place at the Hanlin house." (Jane Hanlin is a prosecuting attorney in Jefferson County and Keenan's mother; Charlie Keenan Sr. is a former principal of Steubenville High, where he played football.)

Because Penn State now shows everyone that what they allow now can come and destroy them decades later. This alone is why the punishment meted out to Penn State is important. The message has to be loud and clear that if caught they will pay dearly. No more slaps on the hand.

2. I'm glad that Kent State is taking this seriously.

Whether Keenan's actions can be proven in a court of law to be criminal, he is not entitled to a scholarship nor is he entitled even to admission to the university. I hope they continue to review all of the evidence and deny him his scholarship as well as admission. I would never want him on the same campus as my teenaged daughter.

I have no confidence in the justice system in this case, so I am quite happy to see civil action occurring, and I'm hoping that these boys, and those who abetted them, are financially ruined for the remainder of their lives. That includes the prosecuting attorney, the sheriff, and all the coaches who turned a blind eye to this. Absent criminal convictions, inflicting financial pain may be the only thing they'll understand.

Ignoring that her son was there and it may have been at her house - as that may have not been known, the mere fact that she was school board superintendent of the school of the Football team, some of whose members were charged should have been a reason to argue that she did not have a conflict.

Each sport has a coach, some sports have a coach and an assistant coach, some sports have a coach and position coaches, etc.

Usually all paid from the pittance we allow for education.

It creates a small cadre who set themselves apart beause they are the "leaders" and the "power brokers".

We have that situation here where the Chief Deputy Sheriff (who really runs the sheriff's office) serves as mayor of the biggest city in the county, the county Roads Commissioner serves on city council of that city, and various School executives or teachers serve on the County Commission.

It gives the opportunity for uchecked favoritism and the ability to carry out agendas against/for specific people in multiple forums.

Think "Boss Hogg" only with County power, County Commission power, and City council power.

We're large enough that there would be many qualified people to fill these positions but there's along heritage of "mill owners", "bankers", and dynasties serving in multiple positions.

More efficient, I guess. Efficient in carrying out their personal agendas.

And for the disturbing news: OSU has 53 reported cases of rape. The next nearest university only had 14.

There is no university in Ohio near the size of Ohio State University, so the number of rapes there compared to the number on other university campuses in Ohio doesn't really give us much information. We would need the rate of rapes per students to know if OSU has more rapes per student than other universities.

In terms of kicking out a student because of a video - I think that that is somewhat problematic, actually. The local authorities in Steubenville seem to have done a very poor job of identifying all the people involved in the assault on the child. Their reports are contradictory, too. The sheriff says he just learned about the video last week, but a news report from last October mentions it. If the investigation had been done properly then this Nadianos probably would have been charged with a crime last fall.

Read the witnesses' testimony here, and the testimony of police detective Riegaud who says that he reviewed the video that Anonymous recently reposted to the web. The authorities had access to that video last fall. Note the date on this article:

Riegaud testified that he reviewed a video clip posted on YouTube of a conversation about the alleged assault. Those comments included a description of one of the defendants engaged in anal sex with the alleged victim.

"We reviewed that video many times to listen to the conversation that was heard in that video," said Riegaud. "Throughout it you hear statements made. There were specific comments, statements made in that, that served not to arrest, but to look into and to dive deeper into it and that helped to guide us. They weren't the only guide. They were part of it."

The video shows him talking about a crime he didn't report. That is a crime in Ohio and violates OSU's student conduct rules.

I don't understand your post. When you said "the next nearest university" I thought that you mean nearest in terms of geographic proximity to Columbus, Ohio.

OSU is one of the largest university campuses in the nation, if not the largest in terms of students on one campus.

I agree that this video is evidence of a crime committed by the person talking on the video. If you read the article I linked, you will see that the video was discussed during the probable cause hearing last October. Why the police didn't arrest the author of that video right then and there I don't know. It seems clear to me that they covered up a lot of illegal activity and blamed this all on two students. Where are the arrests of parents and coaches who provided alcohol to minors? Where is the arrest of the football booster who has naked photos of underage girls on his blog? Why weren't the phone records of the witnesses who testified that they took multiple photos and videos of the assaults accessed by the police?

The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

Did OSU say anything about this student's status as of today? Classes resumed at OSU today. All the reports I'd seen earlier were that OSU noted that he wasn't "in attendance" since late December. Well, they've been on winter break. Nobody was in attendance since last December. The question is whether or not this student is enrolled today.

It is ironic that there would be no question that a student-athlete's scholarship would come under question if it became known that a university booster had given them money, in my mind these allegations show a much lower moral standard (to say the least) than pay for play.
