They announced on Cspan that Barney Frank has asked the Governor of Massachusetts to appoint him interim Senator. Presumably he will run to fill John Kerry's seat.

The word "interim" is correct, BTW.

(2,667 posts)As far as I know you are right, a special election would have to take place. We had a similar thng happen here when Senator Byrd died - and if there is a heave I hope he rests in it - and the state laws required a special election if the expiration of the Senate term was more than 120 days away if I remember correctly. I have no idea if there are special rules for it in Mass, but it could be. Oh, and if I chose the right word it was only a happy accident, no credit due to my vast vocabulary.

(40,168 posts)we seem to have an inordinate amount of special elections.
You'd think I'd know more about the rules by now.

"Yes, in fact, I'm not going to be coy, it's not anything I've ever been good at. I've told the governor that i would now like, frankly, to be a part of that. It's only a three-month period, I wouldn't want to do anything more, but to be honest, it's a little arrogant."
Said Frank, "Coach, put me in."
The placeholder seat would open in the Senate between Kerry's exit and a special election for the remainder of his term, expected in early summer. Patrick has said that he is strongly leaning toward appointing a caretaker for the Senate seat, as happened after the death of former Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.)
Frank, 72, has said that he has no interest in running for the Senate seat in a special election, but that he wouldn't refuse an appointment.
