This didn't just happen, it was the result of a couple of "deals." I don't see why we couldn't uphold our words in that deal. It's not like it wasn't known to be coming at midnight tonight. People had plenty of time to prepare for it.
And compared to what has been agreed to with the senate and the president it does a lot more to reduce the deficit. A whole lot more. The deal just struck is a joke compared to it. A joke. It shows the world that we can nothing about the future, nothing at all.

(52,319 posts)in and of itself, i don't object to the tax side of the fiscal cliff, and i don't in principle object to hefty spending cuts coming mostly from defense. but i do object to the spending cuts on the non-defense discretionary side and i object to the hammer instead of scalpel approach. finally, i certainly object to the timing, as it's about a year too soon to seriously reduce the deficit.
personally, i think the best achievable deal would have been to DELAY pretty much the entire fiscal cliff for one year, at which point it would have not been too ridiculous to just let it happen. or better yet, democrats could drive a very favorable bargain.
