You see, they made the President (and by extension, his supporters) eat shit for four years. "He's a Muslim", "He pals around with terrorists". "He's a Socialist". "He was born in Kenya". "You Lie". "My goal is to make Barack Obama a one term President". These weren't just statements from "crackpots", but from elected officials and spokespeople for the Republican party.
Then there is the Hitler Mustaches and the awful comments from Teabaggers and their supporters. Adelson, Wynn, Trump, the Koch Brothers and on and on. Lies, ridicule, deception, hatred.
Now, he has 4 interrupted years more. He's way smarter than his opponents. Tonight, he has them over a barrel and they don't like it. Graham and McCain are crying on the Senate floor. They have to take a deal they don't like, and the President is rubbing their faces in the shit, and I love it.
I know, their's a lot at stake. I trust this President and he'll get a good deal. It's never perfect, but it will be damn good, considering the Repukes control the House and the teabaggers have a large minority.
My advice to all my DU friends is to not expect to get a 100% deal, but be happy at 80% and enjoy as the other side chokes while they eat the shit that they, themselves, excreted.
It is truly a Happy New Year
On Edit (1/2/13):
Wow, it was better than I could have even imagined. The fuck-up on the Sandy relief really showed the House Repuke leadership as inept and self-serving. The back-stabbing on the Cliff matter was amazing and it could get better. The Republican party could split into two parts, right before our eyes.
Again, my Republican friends who are in the hands of a political master, "HOW DOES SHIT TASTE!!!!!!!!

(1,361 posts)Where is the $250k tax increase?
Where is the increase or elimination of the cap on SS contributions?
Where is the reduction on defense spending.
Where is the elimination of oil subsidies?
Where is your head?

(1,589 posts)this is about the DEFICIT. SS contributes nothing to the deficit. Why are you far left people still bringing it up?
elimination of oil subsidies? maybe?
and I know its hard to believe, but coming from a current s-o-l-d-i-e-r, there are PLENTY of cuts in the military right now. Thing of it is, since so many people in the left generally dislike soldiers -- go ahead and look at most of the posts i saw (only because they were 'trending', which means more people were 'liking' them) about General Schwarzkopf's death --the right can get away with stuff like not funding schools for soldiers. No schools mean no promotions. So we have effectively a stagnant army in many areas and components. Hard to keep volunteers interested when they cant get ahead...so less soldiers ultimately to pay.
Its a distraction. Theyve cut plenty of shit already. Just nothing that really makes a difference. The F35 apparently is back online. Sec Gates killed it years ago.
So like I said in another thread that was censored, STOP denigrating the troops, and put some thought into your comments opposing defensive spending. Troops pay taxes on our wages, and most of us have it partially as a second income. Focus your statements of protest into the parts that actually matter. DOD pork. not the troops. not schools. not training. The Navy didnt need to develop an app to tell you when to take a coffee break. Why is DOD also forecasting weather? we have NWS. FOCUS people

(12,647 posts)I have a son presently in Afghanistan and your comments are despicable. There are many on DU who have kids in the military, and many who are military veterans. Please show me in the post you're responding to where the word "soldiers" was EVER mentioned. You speak of the "left" as though they're different than you. WTF are you doing here then?

(80,708 posts)I don't see any rational explanation- perhaps you, as a defender of defense spending, can provide one- for why we need to spend more than the next 20 nations on the planet combined on "defense". If we've outspent pretty much everyone else, combined, who are we supposed to be "defending" from? Aliens? I don't get it.
Unless it's a self-perpetuating, eternally budget inflating gravy train, as that crazy military-hating liberal hippie Eisenhower warned us against.

HOW DARE YOU even TRY to create the false equivalency of not wanting to send endless dollars down a rat hole (of big corporate grifters) as having ANYTHING to do with soldiers.
SOLDIERS get paid JACK SHIT. ALMOST NONE of that money goes to "SOLDIERS". Your point is 100% wrong, why are you posting here?

(3,003 posts)Would you rather have Bush's tax cuts made permanent, severe cuts made to S.S. and Medicare, and health care reform repealed? I'm not ecstatic about this deal either, but compromise is the only way to get things done when trying to govern.

Unemployment benefits continue for 1 year.
Middle Class tax cats are permanent. Individual rate increase at $400K ($600k less than the $1M plan "B" proposal that didn't get a majority Repuke vote)
Caps on deductions which begin at $250K
No entitlement give-aways
Forced Repukes to vote for a tax increase, splitting their forces, especially in the House.
Child tax credit and tuition tax credit remain.
AMT removed for middle class
doctor's 27% fix not tied to Obama-care (He said he likes the term Obama-care, so now I use it).
Inheritance tax increased from 35% to 40% (I agree, I'd like to get this threshold down to about $2.5M from $5M, but negotiations are give and take).
You have to remember, our US Senators from Conn., Cal., NY and NJ all wanted a higher threshold than $250K, as their constituents are higher earners and the standard of living in those states is also more.

(47 posts)Yes it is a done deal here are the specifics, cliff avoided feather in the cap ???
http://news.msn.com/politics/update-white-house-gop-reach-a-deal-on-the-fiscal-cliff
You are acting like this is somehow good news that the Democratic President caved to his 250K red line in favor of getting a deal done that brought in less revenue because it only increases the taxes on people making 450K and above.....
When by any margin of reading other threads on this very forum, he was holding all the cards and all the chips and could easily have negotiated as a tax cutter starting tomorrow.
It saddens me a bit because I was on that side and listened to that crap being spewed by the rightwing talk radio and fox news, luckily I woke up and then I come here thinking that people would really be much different and maybe stick to principles... and like I said on an earlier thread the Right loves it when this side caves in, furthermore this whole debate is about pennies really we are talking about a 5 percent tax increase on the very wealthy that is nuts, that won't even give Obama enough money to pay for spending increases over the next 10 years what we really should be talking about is serious tax increases, this country is facing a financial threat bigger than any threat from any War in our history the tax rate called out in 1942 by FDR was 94 percent marginal income tax rate and he lowered the top bracked from a million down to 200K So truely the rich paid a fair share of their income to sponsor the War the countries very survival depended on it.... Today I argue we face the same threats.... How can we even be considering messing with programs that the most vulnerable among us depend on to live in favor of allow the fat cats to get fatter and fatter, It is time for a truly patriotic call for those with the means to pay the most to get this country back on an even keel. If we keep going down this dysfunctional road of beleiving the rightwingers meme of government spending being the problem than we are going to hurt the most vulnerable.
If the choice is do nothing and face ultimate collapse of the currency or force the richest to pony up and pay their real fair share than that is exactly what we the people should be demanding...
Why aren't we talking about a VAT?
Why aren't we talking about wealth tax?
Why aren't we talking about a banking or trading transaction tax?
How about a massive yearly tax on people that want to "bear arms" 5k per yearly renewable license, no infringement on your rights just pay whats due?
Seems to me that the moderates are the ones that will be pulling us ultimately toward paying this debt on the backs of the elederly and the poor.... and that really sucks.

(8,652 posts)I negotiate for a living, and this is a very good deal.
There is, and will continue to be, a right wing majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. They are against raising any taxes and are willing to hold the middle class hostage to get what they want. They are against any spending outside of the military. They hate unemployment benefits and safety net programs. They hate government and will attempt to starve it.
This is a good deal for the Democrats, because our base wants government to work. We understand the system and the system was built for compromise.
This is just a precursor of the fights ahead and each political fight gives us the leverage. The 14th Amendment will be invoked to make the "debt ceiling" unconstitutional, thereby taking that Republican card off the table (that's a prediction).
Then comes immigration reform. The right wing Republicans will be left with a "Hobson's Choice", either join the Democrats in comprehensive reform, in which the Democrats will get all of the credit and the Republicans will be accused of abandoning their base and split the party again, or obstruct the issue, get all the blame and risk forever being the minority party of this country.

While Bush was in term they were happy little brats getting their way & gloating about it every chance they could, with the media cheering them on! Once Obama was in office, they turned to snotty little brats, showing the depth of their vile nature & the media is silent. If such disrespect had been shown to Bush, the outcry would have deafened the world. I don't know how sane, aware people can support the GOP. I'm stumped how the likes of Ryan & the rest of the assholes continue to win their seats. America needs to put them in a time out corner, for a very long time.

Democratic Presidents can no longer be considered "soft" since Obama (and the Navy SEALs) took out Osama bin Laden in 2011, after years and years of failure by tough-talking hombres like W.
