where I live on the Kenai Peninsula. The flashes of light you saw were headlights. This view is spectacular. The tide goes in and out, whales sometimes come in to hunt fish, eagles sit on the lumps of ice in the low tide waiting for fish and the sky is remarkable. This is one of the most scenic drives in America.
I can go a few miles outside of my town into the country to where there are no lights to contaminate and see that. If it is especially cold, you can hear the northern lights. THey groan.
