(617 posts)that the really smart guys, in whatever walk of life, never get the recognition they deserve while they're alive?
I'll tell you why - because they can usually look forward and see what is to be and nobody wants to hear that. And we hear about Patton and MacArthur - but Bradley, Bull Halsey or Nimitz? Rarely these days.

(34,582 posts)Patton was a smart man, and his skills as a tactition was needed to win battles. Bradley was a strategist, which was also needed. This country, however, only seems to remember tacticians.

Egalitarian Thug
(12,448 posts)Double Medal of Honor recipient (the direct cause for changes in the rules to ensure that there will never be another) who refused to bow down to the powers that rule for his own gain.
He has been swept under the rug. Disappeared from history because he did what he knew was the right thing to do and thereby embarrassed a bunch of very rich, very powerful people. People whose descendants still run this nation and are among those that still rule this world.
There are a very few honors that transcend politics and all the other divisions in our society. The Medal of Honor is one. Nobody with even the slightest hint of any sense of honor will speak ill of one of these actual heroes, and General Butler received it, twice. That's why he is being removed from American history.
It is up to us to make sure they fail.

He was also the guy that Dubya's granddaddy approached about a military coup against FDR and installing a fascist government.
Only WW2 saved Dubya's granddaddy from being hanged for treason.

(12,448 posts)about him out there. After you learn about the extraordinary accomplishments of this man you will ask why everybody who attended school in America doesn't know his name as well as Washington, MacArthur, or Patton.
His Wikipedia entry is a good place to start (Be sure to check out his military awards).
I really should have read the subject line more carefully.
