MONDAY:Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., called for a bipartisan conversation on reforming gun laws.
Im a proud outdoors-man and huntsman, like many Americans, and I like shooting, but this doesnt make sense, Manchin said. I dont know anyone in the sporting and hunting arena who goes out with an assault rifle; I dont know anyone who needs 30 rounds in the clip to go hunting.

WEDNESDAY:
West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who suggested earlier in the week that the time had come for some gun control restrictions, said on Wednesday that hes not supporting a ban on anything and he repeatedly defended and praised the NRA.
Im not supporting a ban on anything. Im supporting a conversation on everything, Manchin said on West Virginia MetroNews.
Manchin has an A rating from the NRA, and applauded the groups decision to hold a press conference Friday where theyve promised to offer meaningful contributions.
I cant say yes or no to any of the things, Manchin added when asked if he would support restrictions on magazine size or an assault weapons band. Because all Ive asked for, I want the NRA to tell me why we have any weapon you might want. Is there any grounds or any changes or anything they would like to look at? I dont know. I cant even get a conversation to have responsible people at the party, if you will, or the table, to finally come out with a conclusion.

(21,786 posts)if you know anything about West Virginia, or about the South in general, you'd realise that the fact that he's calling for any review of existing gun laws with an eye to some new regulation is a pretty big thing. You're talking about a state that's overwhelmingly white, and overwhelmingly rural, and that voted for Romney in the last election by a margin of 27% (all of these factors are social/cultural indicators of a greater propensity to gun ownership). A liberal who expressed strong views on the need for immediate gun control would not be elected in West Virginia. So you know, it's better to recognise that it's important that he's saying "something needs to be done", even if it's not exactly what you want to hear.
