45. People wrongly focus on the Teflon. It's the brass and steel core that improves penetration.

The Teflon coating was added to reduce wear on gun barrels. It apparently aids in penetration of glass and metal, but actually decreases the bullet's ability to penetrate body armor.

Coating a regular bullet with Teflon . . . well, that's just stupid. But steel-core rounds, like those sold by KTW, need the coating so they don't wreck the gun barrel. Originally, KTW developed these bullets to help law enforcement, to give them ammunition that could more easily penetrate windshields and car doors.

I think this is sort of like the way abortion finally became an undirty word for the Democrats in the last election because the antiabortion nuts were so over-the-top offensive. At last, politicians on both sides are proud, not scared, to talk about preventing gun violence. This discussion should be interesting in a very similar way to the abortion-rights issue, only with 20 dead innocent children and 6 dead heroic adults it will be even more profound. There is really no way to stand behind the universal right to own assault rifles the way that the religious right stood behind their beliefs about abortion.
