Thoughts on Heroes ...

I was watching Morning Joe, while getting ready for work, and heard the term "hero" mentioned; I think the term was appropriately used.

They were running a segment on the reporter, Richard Engel; he was taken captive and rescued. One of the MJ crew referred to Engel as a Hero ... Why? How is reporting the news particularly heroic? He is certainly doing a dangerous job; but heroic? Now the rescuers may have acted heroicly; but Engel ... I don't know.

This got mme thinking about how the word is currently being used. If one is a 1st responder or are in the military, one is automatically deemed a hero ... regardless of what that person actually does in that uniform. What about the fireman that never went into the burning building; or the police officer that never confronted the bad guy; or the soldier that spent her entire military career in the JAG Corp. Are they heroes ... Have they done anything particularly heroic?
