NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Investigators say school shooter Adam Lanza visited an area shooting range but have not concluded whether he actually practiced shooting there.
Ginger Colbrun, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, would not identify the shooting range in question or say how recently he was there.
She says investigators have concluded that Lanza's mother, Nancy, visited shooting ranges several times.
Colbrun says it's still not clear whether Nancy Lanza brought her son to the range or whether he ever fired a weapon there.
Authorities say Lanza shot his mother in the head four times, then drove to an elementary school with enough ammunition to kill every student. He killed 26 people, then shot himself as police arrived.
Dear God he shot his mother four times in the head!

This kid had BIG problems & I believe she was in deep denial about how serious they were.

(25,595 posts)He had big problems. Probably too big for the schools and doctors. (My kid was that way at one time. Psychiatrists can't solve all mental illness) Mom is stuck trying to solve most of it herself. He resents it. Blames her for everything.
Mom was taken into the abyss with him.

(5,506 posts)As a recently retired educator, I can tell you that the schools do not know how to deal w/autism or Asperger's. And I don't believe the medical community does, either. It is becoming the elephant in the room in schools. I taught computer classes & for some reason these kids are attracted to computers. As a result, I had quite a few in my classes, but they began showing up frequently w/those born after 1990. I could actually tell a difference in all my students who were born after 1987. I could draw a line in the sand right there! I don't know what happened, but the kids changed then. I often wondered if it had something to do w/the fallout from Chernobyl. Personally, I feel like aspartame has something to do w/it, too.
Concerning autism, I know the mercury in the vaccines is still considered a possibility by many, but there has not been enough attention (money) devoted to this problem. I always felt like it was being swept under the rug & we teachers were "on our own" in learning to deal w/the kids. Unfortunately, we learned by trial & error & conferring w/one another. As w/any group of individuals, there are some who do lash out. I sensed an extreme frustration in them, especially in dealing w/change in their environment or routines. It is no secret that the number of kids suffering from this disorder is increasing exponentially--the latest figure from the CDC is 1 in every 88 kids is autistic.
Sadly, as w/most of the health problems in our country, the medical community is "medicating" these kids w/"mind-altering drugs" (drugs that have some very severe side-effects, including suicide & maniacal behavior).
My hope is that, besides the gun law debate, our society will demand more research & attention be given to WHY we are seeing so much of this just crop up out of nowhere so suddenly & deal w/the cause & not just drug these kids. (I had some that actually drooled from being on so much medication.)
And, yes, because the majority of homes now are headed by single mothers (who are often working more than one job), they become the scapegoats & shoulder the burden of trying to deal w/the kids. Always blame the mother....it's been the battle cry of psychology since the beginning. (sigh) Fathers never seem to be held responsible for the kids' actions, often completely absolved.
From your post, it is obvious you have walked in similar moccasins. It sounds like your child has resolved their situation. I certainly hope so. I know it is a difficult path.

Maybe he had issues with females, related to his mom. She, if the stories are true, seemed to have problems of her own. Anyone who is so paranoid they are stockpiling weapons and arms in their home fearing 'civil unrest', has some issues of their own.
Especially with someone in the house who you know has definite problems.

So much coming out...so little we can trust at this point.
