Father accidently shoots 7 year old son outside gun shop
I remember reading this story last week. I'll bet that if you had asked this father five minutes before the accident, he would have told you what a responsible gun owner he was. Probably has a gun safe at home to go along with his gun safe in his car. However, he somehow missed the bullet still in the chamber.
"...Investigators said Loughrey told them he didnt realize there was a bullet still in the chamber. This happens all too often where people think the gun was empty, Lt. Eric Hermick told The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Loughrey was trying to sell two guns at the store one a scope rifle and the other, the handgun, state police said. The owners told Loughrey the store doesnt buy guns so Loughrey and his son returned to the truck with them. Loughrey put the boy in the passenger seat and loaded the rifle into the truck, state police said. He was attempting to get inside and reached to put the handgun in the center storage console when it fired, they said. ..."

As the article states, this happens all too often. FTR, FBI statistics show that people are more likely to be killed by a loved one than a stranger or an intruder. Women in particular are more likely to be killed by a husband or a boyfriend than a stranger. Also, more men kill their wives and girlfriends than women who kill their husbands and boyfriends, and the numbers are not even close.
