(17,199 posts)... but it seems like Roger doesn't have the range he used to have.
Still I love the performance.
I attended their farewell tour in 1982.
Alas...

(102,419 posts)and for as long as they have)....
I look at the Rolling Stones, the Who, Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, Clapton-- and I am very impressed they have kept it up. How few of today's bands will be performing 5 years from now? 10 years? More?
HuckleB
(35,773 posts)They just old guys up there getting laughs.
It's not much different than karaoke, or your local cover band, any more.

(35,773 posts)I don't kowtow to sentimentality. I see too many shows. Outside of Springsteen, Waters and Alicia Keys, this show sucks. And that's being kind.

(35,773 posts)Daltrey missed almost every note he tried to hit tonight.
That means he objectively sucked.

(17,199 posts)songs such as "I'm Down" and "Drive My Car" and "Helter Skelter" and "Oh Darling" ... I think he just might be able to pull it off, to get that Cobain sound. So I'm hopeful.

(2,404 posts)Dylan is proof that you don't have to know how to carry a tune to be a rock legend.
HuckleB
(35,773 posts)But that doesn't mean one can't make a mockery of one's own material down the road.
IOW, that's a red herring, if you're trying to justify Daltrey's off key singing.

(17,865 posts)of the original live. I still have my CDs and old concert DVDs, and I take solace in them. I can't see paying $100 to see old timers struggling to perform. I prefer to remember them in their prime as intact bands. Also I can see some real good cover bands for free at our summer festivals. Smaller crowds. Just get the lawn chair out, grab a ribeye steak sandwich, and enjoy them.
The Who were magical once, and I have those memories. So much support is just trying to relive the past and not seeing what is on stage now. Of course a 60+ year old man is not going to be able to do what a 25 year old man can do. I won't begrudge Daltrey and Townsend making a buck. Folks don't have to pay for the tickets. The audience gets the opportunity to relive the past. Just count me out. I am going to watch The Kids are Alright instead, and think of seeing the movie with my good High School friend. Also remember seeing them live the only time in 1980 in Baton Rogue with my brother. Moon was gone, but they still had life. Seeing their "Final Concert" in my dorm cafeteria in 1984. I wish that really had been their last concert. Hearing Quadrophenia for the first time while eating pizza with my best friend. Those are great memories.

(31,464 posts)This ain't jr. high anymore. If you want it to sound like it did when you were feeling up Mary McGilicuddy, go put the vinyl on your turntable and squeeze your old man-boobs. I don't care that they don't sound exactly the same as they did 35 years ago. I just like watching them perform together. Do you seriously think Kanye will be doing his schtick when he's 65? Hell, he sucks NOW!
I wake up very early in the morning and I couldn't shut it off - watched every last minute. Rock and roll royalty came out to raise money - it was a beautiful thing.

(42,779 posts)Despite what you may believe, there is no "objective truth" when it comes to evaluating rock music performances. I suspect I've seen the Who more often and over a longer period of time than pretty much anyone on this board. Is it the same band I saw back as four piece with Keith and John in the 60s? Of course not. But imo they put on a tighter, tougher performance than just about anyone out there tonight. Alicia Keys? Seriously boring. Bruce -- not at his best at all. Paul with Nirvana? Interesting, but limiting.
Those are my opinions. Yours differ. So be it.

(4,528 posts)saw them before Tommy at the Fillmore east and Tommy 3 times plus I think a total of 7 times including the "74 tour. I sent my kids on 11/5 to go see them.. They loved them. In the past year I took my kids to see Clapton, Beck and the Allman's.
I saw Bruce at Red Rocks in '80 and I walked away as think it was false spontaneity. That is was all practiced and rehearsed. I thought jumping on the piano was bullshit. I never felt that about the Who or any of the other bands I mentioned.
I saw everyone including Joplin.

In a pointless way.
PS: You do realize I was talking tonight's performances, right?
Oh, oops.
Double PS: There is no apostrophe in Red Rocks.

(4,528 posts)nit picking. I didn't think Springsteen was so great tonight. I always think he over performs and I think his act is very rehearsed. There is little spontaneity in it and it's all been done before. Like jumping on the piano is"spontaneous" I did think Clapton and Waters were excellent and I did see Cream, Blind faith, 461 Ocean Blvd tours and to this day one of my big regrets is not seeing Derek.
As far as Red Rocks goes. I saw the Dead, Joni MItchell with Pat Methany, Santana, Bruce and others there. What is your experience there?
Also your comments show a ahole when I have seen one.

(26,060 posts)throughout the years...some dozens of times. If you expect them to sound the same now as they sounded DECADES ago, you expect too much. Nothing sentimental about that at all. It was an amazing concert.

Huh? Yeah, except for the fact that they WROTE the songs and made them the world-hits they are.
Other than that, yeah, it is EXACTLY like karaoke. Oh, I forgot the millions of people who disagree with your opinion.
At the end of the day, they are entertainers who bring joy and excitement. It is not a science, it is a performance and I thought Roger was impressive as hell.
You are welcome to your opinion, but do not confuse your opinion with a fact.

(102,419 posts)That one poster here could not simply post his criticism once or twice, but felt compelled to do so continuously and obsessively in response to anyone who said anything positive whatsoever in this and the other thread, is, well, his problem.
Any humble contribution I could afford to make to this cause pales in comparison to the chance to see these iconic, if aging, performers one last time. Great cause and a very impressive line-up of talent.

(20,222 posts)When you're setting something like this up, you pretty much have to decide if you're going to pay the acts or not. My guess is they probably only paid for travel expenses. There are some acts who absolutely, positively will not perform at benefits for free, no matter how honorable the cause. Phony Joanie Baez is one.

(9,463 posts)they were shooting for. I am seeing a LOT of youngsters on the #121212Concert feed diggin' the old guys and knowing who they are. One teenage girl on there said she had Billy Joel posters on her wall as a pre-teen, haha! Good for her!

(26,060 posts)They were aiming for an age group that has disposable income - that's people in their 40s and 50s - rock and rollers than can afford the $2500 ticket price. The artists were performing for free to help out their neighbors and you complain they don't sound like they did at the height of their careers. I will honor them for what they accomplished last night.
