Could you ever see yourself switching?
The repubicans are in a current state of disarray. Boner has been hung out to dry. The Young Guns are no place right now, scrounging for ammo and getting no respect. The state level repubicans, meanwhile, keep trying to outdo each other pegging the needle on NUTZ.
Their Voices of Reason include, headache inducingly, the likes of Fathead Bush and Haley Barbour. Wow. Who'da thunk it? That pretentious little shit, Mark McKinnon and the No Labels crowd are trying to stick their noses back into the tent, hoping to be once again relevant.
How soon until we start to hear the invocation of names like John Vliet Lindsay, Nelson Rockefeller, Bill Weld, Lincoln Chaffee, Charles Percy or Mark Hatfield? Many others, Hell, even Barry Goldwater. Eisenhower and Dewey, and others of their ilk, were likely more liberal than even some of today's Democrats.
The repubicans will, soon enough, start backing gay marriage and backing off their War on Women. They will become champions of immigration reform. They will sound thoughtful and caring.
They have all the apparatus they need to say it long enough and loud enough to make it stick. Just like they have on every other issue they adopt.
In all of that, it is probably true that some of them will be genuine in adopting the rhetoric. I can imagine, for example, a Chris Shays meaning it when he says he favors same sex marriage.
The trick will be to sort out the bullshit.
Through all of this, it seems to me, the repubicans will make a strong showing winning back the moderates and even some of the center left.
My mother, long ago, counseled me to smile a lot, particularly when I least felt like doing so. Smiling, she believed, was not only a sign of an emotion, but also a curative. Soon enough, she often said, the smile will get the appropriate emotion to follow.
That actually works. I counsel my own kids with the same advice.
Similarly, when the repubicans start acting as if they care, some of them may, indeed, start to do so. Or at least be able to own it.
Can you imagine yourself falling into their thrall? Others around you, maybe?
We've made significant headway in some of our issues. I do believe sam sex marriage will soon be accepted at the federal level. I actually think the Supremes will support it.
It seems to me when the repubicans start to sound more rational, less hateful, they will gain followers.
And I worry about that. Because we *know* who they are and what they believe.
Those luminaries I mentioned earlier? A lot of people who think today as they did then are modern day Democrats.
