DU POLL: Do you think what you do as a living relates to whom you are as an individual anymore?

When I was young I think for the most part what you did for a living related somewhat to whom you were as an individual ... direction in life, interests, talents, the essence of being, something like that ... I think today people are often totally dissociated between their personal life and their work life. I realize this is a broad brush, but I'm wondering what DU thinks.

I think for many people today their job has relatively little bearing as to whom they are as an individual. ... because jobs today are often just a way to get enough money to live/survive.

I'm an electrician but that no more defines me as an individual than does my love of soup.

but then I got laid off. It taught me a lot about what I did for a living vs. who I really was.

important to me is that it was done very well. My last official career (business systems consultant/systems analyst/database architect) seem to suit that requirement perfectly and then the MBAs came into vogue and ended that (quality is utterly irrelevant to them).

Now I work with animals, they matter.

I'm a caregiver for the elderly. It is what I am. I have always taken care of things growing up, (animals, kids. relatives, etc) and it just comes natural to me. I have been very lucky that I have always been able to work in the caregiving field... going on 30 years now.
Sometimes the money isn't the greatest but I make up for it in job satisfaction!

The thing I see is that people who do have a job that relates to "who they are" seem to assume it works that way for everyone. For many people (including me), a job is just what they do for a paycheck.

Those people also seem to want to talk endlessly about their work and assume I do too. But when I come home, the last thing I want to do is talk about my job.

I want to do my job well, but my job has very little to do with "who I am".

I don't know if it is different now than it was years ago or not.
