Since when did conservatism simply devolve into, I've Got Mine, Screw You?

Cutting Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits is vogue among elites in Washington and their corporate lobbyist allies. These programs did not cause our deficits, but many elites want to cut them because they fundamentally want to see them privatized.

Take Arthur Brooks. He’s the president of the right-wing American Enterprise Institute. Yesterday he tweeted that raising the Medicare eligibility age is “at least a step in the right direction”:

1. It always was, to a certain extent

But I think the main shift started happening during the Eighties (because of Reagan) and finally reached it's height under Bush.

2. I was born towards the end of the 80's

So I obviously didn't follow politics then. But it seemed like a really bad time that really started the big rightward shift in American politics. And we've been living with it ever since.
