wants to buy their dope from the gubmint? In a cellophane package. With a tax stamp. With the government's permission. Regulated, taxed and doled out.
It's almost not cool anymore.

(288 posts)But what I still am is commonly referred to as "Type A" and pot, when I used it, was a simple, effective way to finally relax.
It being illegal has everything to do with why I haven't had any for the last 15+ years.
I live in MA and really hope we're on the short list of upcoming states to legalize pot.

(45,851 posts)Society will be losing a lot of people we have been using for many years as objects of scorn, there will be a severe scapegoat crisis forthcoming and the next group of scapegoats has yet to be clearly ascertained.
A judgmental and punitive society such as ours cannot function without scapegoats and they will be found somewhere.

(591 posts)Can you say DUID?
Pretty soon, lots of people will know how.
Washington Marijuana DUI Law To Take Effect on December 6, 2012
... I-502 creates a very specific legal standard for Marijuana DUI setting a per se limit of active THC of 5 nanograms per milliliter of blood.
...the new marijuana DUI statute changes how and when the state can pursue a marijuana DUI conviction
Marijuana DUI and Persons Under 21 Years of Age=Zero Tolerance
Effects on Medical Marijuana users
Because the established legal limit is so low, it is very likely that anyone who uses marijuana on a daily basis for medical and therapeutic purposes will find themselves over the new legal limit at virtually all times.

DUID: Better hope it doesn't come to your state
You Are Going Directly To Jail: What It Means, Who's Behind It, and Strategies to Prevent It
There's a new front in the "War on Drugs" and its name is DUID.
DUID, short for "driving under the influence of drugs," is the latest buzzword among politicians and police -- however, in this case, words can be deceiving.

Well intentioned WA voters were sold a sack full of rubbish. The media didn't help, portraying this ridiculous bill as "legalization". Now in the Seattle Times people are asking what the hell the Liquor Control board is doing getting involved. LOL Proof another sucker supporter never bothered to read the actual LAW. The entire cannabis business is now owned lock stock and barrel by the STATE LCB.
This isn't about "legalization" it's about total control and revenue.
Some of those who tried to point this out were mocked, scorned and ignored.
Well now it's time to read and laugh (from another state)
Why not turn the entire Cannabis industry over to the very people that busted down doors, shot pets and ruined lives?
sheesh good luck WA (and don't toke before driving- OR Even the night before--- unless you want to pay)

(591 posts)have a receipt proving you bought your little one ounce baggie from a state licensed and taxed (3x) store. Don't have 29 grams! Or it's just like nothing changed. And don't grow a single plant, it's still a felony.
What? There's no state licensed and taxed stores yet?
And the State Licensed stores are going to put their money in FDIC insured banks?

(9,709 posts)I know the law..I know about the DUI provision...doubt very much if it would have passed otherwise. New Approach Washington did focus groups prior to putting forth the initiative to see what was needed to get voters to say yes.
I realize it's not perfect. I voted for I-502, we very simply weren't going to get everything all at once, but for the time being, this is a hell of a lot better than nothing..
The stores will be happening by approximately this time next year as long as the feds stay out of it..

(21,475 posts)Pot will be regulated as alcohol is regulated. Also part of the legalization was the right to grow your own. If you buy wiskey from a different and bring it into Washington they don't have a problem with that...Same as pot, also they can't just draw blood at any ol' time.. I don't know if they have any sort of field tests for marijuanna but I have never heard of any...

(14,910 posts)This is about providing an alternative to pharmaceutical induced palliative care for individuals with chronic or terminal health care issues.
My uncle recently died from a rare for of T-cell lymphoma, an extremely painful terminal prognosis.
We encouraged him to self-medicate during his last few months, as the pharmaceuticals and clinical trials made him very ill; vomiting was a horrendous, hour-long conflict for him which left him physically wiped out.
He wouldn't try the marijuana treatment I offered to procure, because even after reading about it's advantages; was illegal in New York State.
But, go on and worry about it not being "cool" anymore... there are a lot of other illegal activities you can engage in to get your fixation of being cool.

(17,183 posts)...and there aren't any legal avenues of distribution yet.
"It begs the question, if they can't buy it through a medical marijuana shop, which only people with a prescription and medical marijuana license can, how do they get it?" Washington State Liquor Control Board spokesman Brian Smith said Wednesday.
Growing and selling marijuana will still be prosecuted as a felony, King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg told CNN.
"So I'm not sure where you're suppose to get it," Satterberg said. "If you stumble across some on the street or it falls from the sky, then you can have it. Otherwise, you are part of a criminal chain of distribution."

It's a start, but I'd still be casting a wary eye in the direction of Holder and the DOJ to see how they handle it. (I'd expect a Cease and Desist Order, which would wind up in federal court, but IANAL.)

(3,266 posts)my delight in legal recreational marijuana was tampered a bit because now it's controlled by "the man".
This post was about RECREATIONAL marijuana, not medical. I'm THRILLED to pieces that both medical and recreational marijuana is on it's way to being legal, mainstream, available to people who need it, and people who want it. But, until yesterday, I had never considered what it would look like and feel like to go hand open to the government for my pot because now they say it's OK. Just a personal revelation I was sharing.
I was just saying, somehow it's just not the same "fuck authority" action that it once was. Part of the "cool" of it was ABOUT buying, growing, smoking it anyway, because it does so much good for so many people for so many reasons, and that "the man" wasn't going to keep us from it.
I'll miss the subversive, free-love, hippie, counter-culture, anti-establishment side of it. I'm very happy things are moving in the direction of legalization, but I'm going to miss the counter-culture revolution that got us there. I'll be nostalgic for the joy of being in a park, at a concert, and smoking it openly and brazenly in SPITE of the cops being there, because there were so many of us smoking it they couldn't begin to arrest us all.
Doesn't that make sense, without having to get all snarky and indignant about it?
