They totally and completely misjudged my reaction to a piece of information that they would have found comforting, I found exactly the opposite.

there. Some people are toxic to you. Rejecting them may seem hurtful to the person being rejected. Hopefully they learn something from it. But of course you have to say no many times in your life.
