WASHINGTON Sen. John McCain perhaps made his preference for secretary of state even more clear Monday at a press conference, when, taking the podium from Sen. John Kerry, he said, Thank you very much, Mr. Secretary.
Kerry is considered one of the final contenders to be nominated as secretary of state when Hillary Clinton steps down from the post. He has also been mentioned as a candidate for defense secretary.
The other person being touted for secretary of state is United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice. Rice has been embroiled in controversy about her role in the aftermath of the September 11, 2012 attacks on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi.
McCain has been one of Rices most vocal critics and said that he would have very big concerns during confirmation hearings were she to be nominated to head the State Department.

(11,605 posts)They used to be really good friends, part of a group of Senate veterans. Their relationship was strained when McCain didn't do enough to stand up to the Swiftboaters, but they still work together a lot and maybe have patched things up.
I am no fan of McCain these days but his support of Kerry for SOS is not necessarily nefarious.

(31,834 posts)He doesn't get to bully and Push around President Obama. I'm serious - since when does ANY progressive or liberal eveeeer have to listen to one of 'those' people. We won - now he needs to shut up - since he's not doing or saying anything of value.

(113,079 posts)They know damn well the best way to keep non-interventionist Kerry from being named is to get all the GOP senators that Obama hates the most to pretend they want Kerry.
When has ANY Republican hawk preferred a noninterventionist Democrat over a neocon Democrat?
Some lefties don't know their enemies as well as they think. The left media is being incredibly obtuse over this current dog and pony show from the GOP shitstirrers.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,790 posts)would give that dirtbag Brown another shot at the Senate. I really don't think McCain and his Mini-Me are clever enough to play that kind of reverse psychology on Obama - and Obama should be able to appoint whoever he thinks would be the best SoS - Rice, Kerry, or maybe somebody else - without having to put up with a lot of trumped-up bullshit.
They want Kerry out of the US Senate for a variety of reasons.
Number one to win back a senate seat they just lost to Liz Warren.
Number two to alter the foreign relations comm.
Number three to get rid of a very high ranking Dem in the Senate.
Number four is just to get a few jollies by distaction and trying to sway Obama.
Number five maybe should be number one, racism. They want a white boy to be the face of the US in the world.
blm
(113,079 posts)hawkish policies need a neocon Democrat at State and Defense.
If it was about a Senate seat they'd target a seat they'd be more likely to win than in Mass, where the Dem voters learned their lesson about off year elections.
pampango
(24,692 posts)They have ginned up nonfactual controversy about Rice since long before the election. I doubt that was part of a strategy to get Kerry on as SOS.
The only evidence I have seen that repubs are any good at 3-D chess is when DUers ascribe that ability to them to explain why they happen to agree with the GOP take on an issue.
blm
(113,079 posts)was to put to rest the expectation that Kerry was replacing Clinton at State. Sorry, pamp, but one thing these losers do KNOW is how to manipulate the press and manage leaks, and also how to use Dems against each other.

(8,827 posts)I think that's behind a lot of the rhetoric from the right regarding the SoS position. Kerry isn't likely to run for POTUS again but putting an up-and-coming democrat in the SoS position might create some buzz around that person for a 2016 run.

(27,315 posts)But I understand it is more fun to believe this.
But, given that the names that are surfaced in the media are all more hawkish and/or Republicans, I continue to think they are trying to get the two top names out of the equation and get some hawk from the democratic party.

After all, that is the only reason McCain and the other GOP senators want to see Kerry become SOS. Not that Kerry wouldn't be a great SOS, but that isn't really their concern.

(31,849 posts)Kerry would make an excellent SoS, and that he wants the post, I would love for him to deflate the bubble by declaring that he does not want to be considered for the post.
blm
(113,079 posts)and knows he has Obama cornered into naming her.
Can any one of you name ONE TIME when GOP senators ever demanded a noninterventionist Democrat to be head of State Dept over a neocon Democrat who often supports the GOP hawks on foreign policy?
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)you're giving McCain waaayyyyyy too much credit. First, because McCain has proven time and again (and moreso, in recent years) that he does not possess the ability to look down-board. And secondly, President Obama has proven time and again that he marches to his own drummer ... He doesn't do anything because someone wants/doesn't want him to, least of all someone in the opposition. And McCain knows this.
blm
(113,079 posts)support for Kerry as they target Rice whose neocon foreign policy philosophy is a better match for their hawkishness.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)because I happen to recall that the SoS does not set foreign policy objectives ... The U.S. foreign policy objectives would be the same, regardless of who the SoS is ... the only question would be the effectiveness in which the policy objectives are carried out.
And, BTW, I don't believe think McCain, Graham,or Ayotte are being genuine about anything other than being seen as relevent.

Hawks are most comfortable working with neocons on foreign policy.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)I disagree; but okay.
The key is "influence", not sets. In the end, the SoS runs the play the coach, i.e., The POTUS, calls.

(5,158 posts)There was even some talk about them choosing the other as their running mate during their respective Presidential campaigns. However, I do think McCain has an ulterior motive in this -- mainly wanting to see Scott Brown back in the Senate.

(113,079 posts)MCCain has NEVER sided with Kerry politically on foreign policy and he's not to be trusted now. Not ONE of you have decided to question why the sudden turnabout by McCain and Graham? They 'praise' Kerry in hopes of burying the nomination and are pretty confident they have Obama cornered into naming Rice.
