How often do you hear rich people say, "Oh please Mr. Congressman, raise my taxes so millions can still retire at 65."


They got rich because they know how to negotiate deals that work for them not US. And if you think they admire you for negotiating against yourself you are dead wrong! They are laughing at you all the way to the bank!

For some, they think they will be rich someday and should have those perks when they arrive.

For others, they believe that the rich are truly "job creators" and will trickle some of that saving down to them.

Both camps believe that the rich worked HARD for that money and should be allowed to keep it.

When people listen to the same thing over and over and over day after day they tend to be brainwashed into believing everything they hear, and on top of that they refuse to listen to any other source for information. Identity politics / tribalism. Team players; and of course if their team does something, it's good. If the other team does the same thing; it's bad.

I also sense some working class types carry water for the rich to avoid stating certain single social issues as why they support the GOP: ie it makes them sound "smart" to spout pundit conventional wisdom talking points rather than say god & guns ( or even race ).

they are patriots. Misguided, but patriots. It's all about virtue.
They are willing to pay the price of being poor or even be exploited in order to protect what they think is the cornerstone of our Democracy: individual freedom. Oh, this is a simplistic and naive view of Individual Freedom but it is still powerful.
Remember the traction Republicans got from "You didn't build that"? It was a crazy, bogus issue but they love the idea that each American is an free-standing enterprise and that the difference between the rich and poor are consequences of ability and hard work or the lack thereof.
"I Built This" is both statement of pride in achievement and a claim of exclusive ownership and individual profit.
Anything else is socialism, communism and hateful to real Americans.
That's why they will denounce 'Obamaphones' as coddling the contemptible freeloaders but low tax rates for the rich are OK because the Rich have virtue. They played the 'American Game' and won.
The Republican Poor cannot claim virtue from success but can claim virtue by denying that they are 'dependent on government handouts'. They are good and loyal losers: gracious enough not to complain that they got a bad break or that the game was rigged.
One of the reasons they hate Obama is that he describes those government dependent freeloaders as if they had virtue.

All this is just conjecture on my part and is probably useless, but it's hard not try a narrative for the poor defending the rich.

There are some that also just don't realize how sever the wealth gap has grown.

I was talking to someone that still thinks that we are in the 60's when the distribution of wealth wasn't so severe and we still had a middle class. They truly think that you just need to work harder at the gas station and you'll get ahead in life. They don't realize how the game has been rigged against them.

19. At the risk of ticking off the middle class, I think the answer lies in those who have enough to be

'Middle Class' support the 1% so that they can still stand on top of those they consider beneath them. Marxist theory (oh, I know, I know, hate to bring it up) there are groups or classes that truly support the 1% and they are paid well. Perhaps not as well as they could be, but much better than everyone else.

The truly poor and vulnerable seldom are addressed in elections or anything else, because they do not possess the ability to get out and organize and then go to vote. If we pat ourselves on the back as well informed and assume that baggers are all living in trailer parks or dirt poor and voting to enslave themselves, I don't think we're seeing the whole picture.

The way that elections are set up in many states makes registering or getting to the polls a logistical nightmare. It is done precisely to keep the poor off the ballot. This year, Obama got around 65 million votes compared to Romney's 60 million. IIRC, the voting population of this country is twice those two figures combined, but we never hear from the other half that didn't vote.

From the news and threads here, historically the right has an interest in demoralizing voters of the other side, and their media, all forms of it, from teevee to radio to online conspiracy idols, get people to think if they are really wise, they won't bother to vote. Yet the right gets their followers excited in church to turn out. So there is something to be gained and something to be lost by voting or not voting and being involved in every down slate election and community.

IOW, I don't think the wealthy have brainwashed the poor that much to win to win elections. Instead, they've paid them well, with contracts of all kinds, government and private. They reward those closest to them. And even the poor are willing to take the crumbs they toss at them. JMHO.
